I would say this....if you are the kind of person who just loves New Orleans and can't stop talking about it when you meet anyone from anywhere else, don't leave. That is a very unique culture and lots of folks just can't be happy anywhere else.
That said, I have lived in a lot of "shitty" places and have pretty much enjoyed every one of them. Corpus is a pretty decent sized city and has all of the things that you would expect in a city of that size.
It is on the coast, so there are surely a ton of opportunities for hunters and fishermen.
The fact that is on the coast, also leaves no doubt in my mind that the place is loaded with decent seafood restaurants...
There is a professional sports team there...
There is a university there, so there is surely some kind of night life.
There is some pretty major industry there, so there is damn sure going to be some money floating around the place.
Basically, you just have to get out and find the things that you like about whatever town you happen to be living within and you are good....the one thing that you won't find there is New Orleans.

I have spent a few weekends there recently and thought it would be A nice place to live. The weather is hot but there is a nice breeze coming off the gulf, they have beaches in downtown as well as the padre island beaches which you can drive on camp on and it goes on for like 70 miles.
Fishing north of the city is good.
big enough to have everything you need but has a small town vibe. lots of trails for running and biking.
Has a really good yacht club
Traffic is no problem. went to several nice neighborhoods with some really nice homes.
Like most of Texas there are a lot of Latinos but I like Latinos

I’ve been here 2 years now and obviously the people bashing the place have either 1) never been here or 2) spent all their time out by the airport which says more about them than it does the town.

Hit me up
I know the college football scene here can be a little tame. I know some people have tried to get some groups going at specific bars but haven’t had much luck do to a lack of numbers.

If you see this girl at the Sunrise Mall, let me know. I've been looking for her.

Uncle and aunt live across the bridge on mustang island behind Snoopys
That’s a very nice area and where all the money is. I’d live there but it’s mostly married couples.
Everything on the Corpus side is Mexican trash.
My niece took us out on NYE there once and we bar hopped. Good god that was a great night of people watching.

I will say this: XOM is building the worlds largest ethelyne cracker there. It will attract high paying jobs and will increase employment and wages. If you want to buy “low”, now is the time (or you may have already missed it)

I travel there frequently for work. There are a lot of very good people down there. That being said ... Corpus is weird as frick and there is nothing to do there. I told my clients to pick a spot for dinner and they chose Salt Grass. It’s a dump. Super Hispanic crossed with shitty Texas beach bums. Lots of drugs. No way would I live there unless it was very short term for A LOT of money.
That's true. I wouldn't raise a family there but it's not as bad as some posters are making it out to be. It is super Hispanic but there's a lot of good people in Corpus.

"For Corpus Christi, we found that the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small). Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon. According to NeighborhoodScout's analysis of FBI reported crime data, your chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes in Corpus Christi is one in 140.
In addition, NeighborhoodScout found that a lot of the crime that takes place in Corpus Christi is property crime. Property crimes that are tracked for this analysis are burglary, larceny over fifty dollars, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In Corpus Christi, your chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is one in 27, which is a rate of 38 per one thousand population."

It’s also becoming a nice-sized export hub for Permian crude.

If I was single and in my mid 20's I would have no problem living in Corpus. I spent a lot of time there during my childhood in the 80's. Fished a lot, camped, hung out at the beach. Had a good time. Of course I haven't been there in 20 years so it could have changed a lot. The only thing I remember negative about it was the amount of drugs present, for even a child and young teen.

Where do you live now
I'm pure Houstonian, but travel and have friends and family in different areas. Just thinking that if I was talking to buddies about a short weekend trip, pretty much everyone would pick the Corpus/Coastal trip over Beaumont.

I guess I don’t think of it as a violent place when I compare to BR or NOLA.
As far as drugs go, I guess it’d be a slight concern if you raise a family here, but that will mostly depend on Home environment, school zoning etc. I think that’s the case in any city of comparable size.
