She applied to everything in that book that she was eligible for, got jobs with the university that paid her money as well as tuition, took out a couple of low interest loans. She graduated on time from that a school that cost over $200k to attend with under $17k in debt, which I gladly picked up as a graduation present. I tell her all of the time that was as valuable as any course she took in college, as it has transferred over in the way she handles her finances. :

100% she learned more from doing that than from anything at school. That's badass.

Here's one that needs to spread as well - Mississippi girl gets full ride to Harvard.

Harvard doesn't give "full rides", just financial aid. They only look at income and give aid based on that. There are no merit awards at any of the Ivies.

That's not taking anything away from an incredible achievement. It's just that her accomplishment is no greater or less than the other 2000 kids that got in.

There are 7 pages, and I have not read them all, so apologies in advance if this has been covered.

How does a reputable organization publish a piece in which they use "pouring over". Pouring. Over. We aren't talking about cereal and milk here.

She wants to major in biology, and wants to be a NICU nurse. Good on her, but someone needs to inform her that you have to major in nursing to become a nurse. A biology degree does not make one a nurse.

And how much did she pay in application fees to get that?

To get a full ride to Harvard? That's a low score.

Harvard didn't give her a full ride. They don't give merit scholarships. The Gates Foundation gave her a full ride as part of their Millenium Scholars Program and she elected to use it at Harvard.

The Millenium Scholars Program is specifically for non-whites.

I didn’t get into Harvard, didn’t apply, not that it would have mattered.... But I was under the impression that scholarships to Harvard were 100% based on need and not on academic prowess. Basically I think if your family makes under 150k combined you get a full ride.

You are correct, if you get into Harvard you will receive aid based on your families needs, more than 20% pay nothing to attend. 100% graduate debt free.

From Harvard:

"Our generous financial aid program—bolstered by the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative, which seeks to increase low- and middle-income students’ awareness of Harvard’s affordability—aims to make Harvard accessible to any student who is admitted.

•Our program requires no contribution from Harvard families with annual incomes below $65,000. About 20% of our families have no parent contribution.

•Families with incomes between $65,000 and $150,000 will contribute from 0-10% of their income, and those with incomes above $150,000 will be asked to pay proportionately more than 10%, based on their individual circumstances.

•Families at all income levels who have significant assets are asked to pay more than those in less fortunate circumstances.

•Home equity and retirement assets are not considered in our assessment of financial need."

Sounds like a very diligent, hardworking, smart young lady with a very bright future. Hope she does well and wish her the best. Not surprising that she is being rewarded. What school doesn't want that type of effort enrolled on their campus?

I’m pretty affirmative how she got into so many schools.

Maybe she just likes the action of applying.
