re: Teacher warns about kids' illiteracy today

The state legislature here in Kentucky is trying to pass a bill that would allow 19 year olds to obtain their teaching license with an associate’s degree. All so they could pay teachers less and fill shortages.
Based on the latest anecdotal and actual illiteracy results, what's it matter?
Is this KY bill in part about addressing "Teacher fatigue" due to behavioral problems? Zero accountability or concern from highly paid school admins? Shortages of qualified, motivated teachers? Maybe the school tax bases are actually overwhelmed, running way in the red for several reasons.
Bachelors degrees and all degrees have obviously been watered down by abysmally lowered standards, political correctness & DEI requisites, and a curriculum so simple and diluted by nonsense that it can indeed be taught by competent, motivated students holding Associates Degrees.
Needless to say, discipline needs to be restored, and curriculum courses and standards need to be elevated and re-calibrated to reflect a renewed philosophy on "education"..

Nothing a four day school week and the elimination of homework won't fix, right?

No. He EARNED it himself.
Highly doubtful that any 13 year old has the maturity to earn the eagle on their own

Except when they do.
Did Mom and Dad help keep him focused? Yes. Did they do the work? No.
He was in a very small troop with a high scoutmaster to scout ratio (1:2). Therefore, he was able to get lots of individual attention when it comes to getting advancements and merit badges checked off. It makes a difference.
And FWIW, in the 18 months since his eagle he's earned an additional 30+ merit badges for a total of 71. But we make him spend 30 mins a day in the summer doing "Scout Stuff" (and have since he crossed over from cubs)....

Starts with parents.
All that is behind us. We are in the middle of organizing home. Books and books everywhere, most for our (now adult) kids. Saving for grandkids one day.
Man, we read a lot to our kids and then they read a lot by themselves.
Paid off big time!

It starts at home. I have teachers in the family and they can tell you within a couple days of getting a new class which kids are read to at home/engaged with and which are just put in front of a tv so mom and dad can do whatever the hell they want.
There ya go. Motivated from the get-go. Parents must be involved to some degree to begin with.
Problems:
School system negligence and entrenched leftist agenda, PC focus, discipline and distractions of "problem" kids, and diluted curriculum problems -- along with institutional loooow standards.
Too many parents of today's kids were themselves under-educated, functioning at previous Middle School education levels after HS graduation. (Unless they've managed to self-educate themselves after HS.)

Because education isn’t our focus anymore.

Using derogatory pet names. Like my mom's chief objection to the Contract With America was to constantly make fun of Newt Gingrich's name.
I didn't refer to "Chappaquiddick Ted." I focused on the facts.

I wonder how admin and the parents are going to feel about seeing her blast her class on social media.

"Dubya" has been a "pet name" for over 25 years now. By EVERYONE. (Where you been?)
Nonetheless, your beef seems to be a diversion from the conspicuous fact that Dubya (R) indeed went out of his way to first reach out TO Uncle Ted (D); he then collaborated WITH HIM to support the ill-conceived "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" anti-education generational poison pill. He even boasted about it.

I did, after 15 years.
As a standard teacher? Or did you move into administration or something? My father retired as a public school teacher. Always knew he didn't make a ton, but what shocked me the most was complete lack of salary increase throughout his career. I made more in promotions and raises in my first 5 years than his entire salary at retirement.

Finland is widely regarded as the best education system in the world with less time in school compared to the US and minimal homework.

About 70% of this falls on the parents. With all the time and resources spent on literacy for so many years, if your kid can't master reading it's a personal problem not an institutional one.

No you didn't. The amount of teachers making 100k a year isn't even a tenth of one percent and those situations are only highly tenured teachers with multiple degrees who have been teaching for decades and are probably near retirement. Truth is there are probably more teachers out there making less than 30k a year than there are making over 100k by multiple multiples.
