There's a massive difference between a teaching assistant doing it and your friends/peers.
I'm baffled you can't see the difference here. One is a joke among friends, the other is an insult between a person in power relative to the student and the student themselves.

I just meant that when I was in high school, we had teachers that joked and commented about things that nowadays most people take offense to. There was always one or two teachers who would pick on one of us for various reasons, but nobody cried about it. Maybe this assistant teacher was just a smartass, it wouldn't have been that big of a deal back about 30 years ago.

I WAS that teacher. I can’t even have any fun anymore, and, quite frankly, I don’t have the rapport with my students that I used to have.
