No they are not. Dogs, that are pets, become reliant, but if they ever had to, they would eventually figure out how to get food.. Ever had a dog get into your trash can?

local animal activist Jill Parrish filed a police report.
Of course she did.

What is the purpose of feeding a live animal to a snapping turtle? I can't think of a legitimate reason.
Because science, apparently.

Is it worse because dogs are pets for the most part? (except in parts of Asia where they are livestock). Or am I just fairly hypocritical myself?
You are not hypocritical. You cannot deny that dogs and cats are different to most of us than other animals.
Snakes being fed mice? Different. Mice are generally a pest, disease carrying vermin that do tons of damage each year. Mice are the natural food of snakes. Puppies are not the natural food of snapping turtles.
We hunt some animals, but we don't hunt dogs and cats. We don't hunt cows. We can and do differentiate between animals.
It is worse because dogs and cats are our common pets.

that local animal activist Jill Parrish filed a police report. Parrish says that another teacher at the school told her the dog that was fed to the reptile was apparently sick.
Meh. Probably bullshite

Hypocritical maybe not the best word. Illogical maybe? Or just emotional. Nothing wrong with that. Again, I am just exploring my thought process.
What if the guy that did it does not revere dogs like some of us. Probably doesn't. What makes him wrong?
Lots of people, even in this thread I bet, hate cats, and would think nothing of bad things happening to them.

They are livestock in some places. We hunt wolves. We hunt foxes that have been raised in cages just to be released to be hunted. They are kind of like dogs.

True. I know I do.
Again, it is awful to me. Heck I don't hunt because I don't see a reason to kill something for the fun of it. But I don't begrudge those that do.
Anyway, good discussion. With some at least.

More positive teacher news. I feel like my colleagues are jealous of all the media attention that the police and Hollywood are getting these days.

4 pages and no "where were these turtles when I was in school" responses?

I'm not a cat fan, but I'd never condone killing a cat for sport.

I would oppose hunting animals raised in cages, as that is not sport. Dogs are domestic, wolves and foxes are not.
Like you, I don't really have an interest in hunting (other than using hounds and then it is more of a chase than for a kill). But, in many places, hunters prevent overstocked wild populations.

Only a black puppy. I mean cops an all.

yall know people feed live mice to their pet snakes all the time, right?
Most don't though. If the snake isn't hungry, a live mouse can severely injure it.

Unless you are a psychopath.

I hope this teacher gets ripped apart by a pair of rabid dogs.

I have been around for decades and have yet to see a snapping turtle eat a live puppy. I doubt anyone has here either.
