I tend to agree with that sentiment, however -- national coverage of this disaster has been very limited. That can really restrict the amount of donations that typically come from sources outside the affected areas.

A celebrity, especially someone like Swift, has a reach of tens of millions of people. That type of exposure will have a huge positive impact on monetary donations for disaster relief.

This is a perfect example of a celebrity using their status and following for a good cause.

1 million is about 0.32% of her net worth. So that would be mathematically equivalent to a person with a 1 million dollar net worth donating $3,236.

But as far as disposable income not needed to live a normal life, it's much easier for her to come up with the $1 million than an average Joe forking out $3236.

It's very generous on her part.
