Still doesn't negate how some outlets will argue that more of your own money in your own pocket is somehow a bad thing.

That isn't what they said though. The issue is not that people have more of their money in their pocket it is that the ~$600 is coming all at once, which not unlike the stimulus checks some people got, is often viewed as found money and spent quickly on consumer goods. That tends to lead to inflation. If that money had come in at roughly $12 a week on average, it wouldn't have the same inflationary pressure.

The problem with this premise is it’s retarded. This is a subset of taxpayers and assuming there were no manual adjustments to their w-4

This isn’t anything like the Covid stimulus payments… at all

You mean at the same time they are already getting their hefty refund? For the ones that are going on a shopping spree with their "free money", they ALREADY would with the arguably much larger amount they are receiving at the SAME time.

Unless I read it wrong... but is IS going to be in conjunction with their usual refund, right?

Why didn’t they adjust withholding in 2025 when this passed?
many like to get large refunds. I prefer to keep it within $500+/-

I think you are explaining why some individuals have the government withhold more. But I believe the implication was that the IRS has not adjusted their withholdings tables for the lower taxes, and this is why there will be so many refunds.

Keep in mind you are arguing with the Chief Global Strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management not me.

First, tax returns always applies inflationary pressure and always will. Supply side is down on many consumer goods now and not expected to change through tax return season. The demand side surge that is always there will be larger next year than usual due to higher average returns. This would apply more inflationary pressure than usual.

This isn't some deep dive econ black magic it is simple macro. The only question here is not if it puts inflationary pressure in the economy it is simply to what magnitude it does over an above the "normal" tax return season.

Exactly, money will be spent on TVs, weed and booze. Oh and degenerates will gamble and play scratch off.

So fear mongering over this is stupid.

CEO of large bank doesn’t know how poor people live. Go figure.

Do you need a step ladder to reach your mailbox?

It’s been as high as 75% but is lower these days.

A tax refund is a reimbursement to taxpayers who have overpaid their taxes, often due to having employers withhold too much from paychecks. The U.S. Treasury estimates that nearly three-fourths of taxpayers are over-withheld, resulting in a tax refund for millions.

3/4 is what? Oh yeah, 75%.

Dumb motherfricker.

A majority of taxpayers do end up with a tax refund: About two-thirds of returns (64 percent) filed in 2024 resulted in tax refunds, according to IRS data.

Everyone with a filing requirement files (or should file) a tax RETURN but not everyone gets or requests a REFUND.

You are welcome, baw.

I assumed he was asking who gets refunded money vs having a balance due.

But you knew that.

The terms are used fairly interchangeably, right or wrong.

If you want to argue semantics the government returns your money. You aren’t actually getting a refund. You didn’t buy anything squirt.

And I know the difference. When I said return to the guy I responded to . I meant money returned to you.

So I’ll say it again. About 65% of filers get money returned. And I’m right.
