Fun fact… George Jones’ wife when he passed away, Nancy, was my step-dad’s aunt. Step-dad bought a 4-wheeler from George years ago. The Yamaha Grizzly 660 is still sitting in my mom’s garage.

George absolutely hated "He Stopped Loving Her Today". It took him like two years to record it because he just didn't want to. When he finally finished it he said, "Nobody will buy that morbid son-of-a-bitch."

George Jones and Merle Haggard were real country music. Not like the country music of today.

Yes, they were but so were String Bean and Grandpa Jones and time marches on.

George Jones wasn't on the same level of Haggard

Completely disagree. Hag had a leg up b/c he wrote, lived and played pretty much all of his stuff but George had the better voice. He is the greatest country singer IMO.

I'd put the GOAT as Johnny Cash.

I love Cash but let's not get crazy.

Vern, Waylon, Conlee… lots of good ones. Nothing at all like them anymore.

I’m an Outlaws and Texas guy.

Waylon and Willie put a stake in the ground and established a whole new direction for the genre.

And they were Texans.

I’ll also die on the hill that says George Strait is his own thing all together. Texas swing and all that.

"He thought it was too long, too sad, too depressing and that nobody would ever play it," Allen writes (via Whiskey Riff). "He hated the melody and wouldn't learn it."

Even Jones later admitted he didn't want to release the song, in his own I Lived To Tell It All autobiography.

"I looked Billy square in the eye and said, 'Nobody will buy that morbid son of a bit--."
