Tamiflu- safe or not?

Side effects are more pronounced with kids. I came down with the flu last week, went to the doctor ASAP. Got a steroid shot and a round of Tamiflu. within a day I was feeling much better. I could have returned to work after 2 days, but decided to take an extra day to chill.

I had to take it this weekend. I woke up Saturday morning thinking I had a sinus infection and went the the doc in the box to appease the mrs. Turns out it was the flu and was prescribed the generic Tamiflu. Did not feel terribly bad Saturday but Sunday sucked. Monday I had no fever and was moving around normally. I cannot say that the Tamiflu helped or hurt but 1.5 days seems like a quick turnaround for feeling about 90%.

ETA: I did have some fricked up dreams on Saturday night, and Sunday morning I was living the lyrics of Comfortably Numb

Tamiflu is hype that came with bird flu.

No, it gained traction during the early 2000's due to anthrax mailings.

I got the flue two weeks ago. The first pill of Tamiflu made me feel worse for a while, but I didn't notice any effect after the first pill. I gave the flu to my one year old son, but my wife who started Tamiflu when I did ended up not getting sick. Not sure if it was because of the Tamiflu or not, but she managed to be in the house with two of us sick and her doing the heavy lifting of taking care of our son and not catch it

Tamiflu destroyed my flu within two days when I had it. Took it on a Wednesday and felt good enough to go back to work on Friday.

Totally worth it.

And did someone say it was $6? I once was charged $120 for it, but that was outside of my insurance companies network. Inside, I'm not sure it was even $20

I have a few doctor friends including my own. They all think tami-flu is worthless and do not prescribe it.

Tamiflu most of the time is given as peace of mind. Most of the time when someone comes in with symptoms it's really too late.

It's overrated IMO. It only cuts the flu symptoms by a day or two and at $9 bucks a pill (you usually get a 10 day supply), it's not worth it. Most insurance companies don't really cover it I'm told because it doesn't do that much good for the cost! (I took it about two weeks ago and the damn flu symptoms lasted a week and a half.)

I took tamiflu and had some crazy side effects with paranoia and minor hallucinations. Never again.

For those with hourly wage jobs, 1099 or scores of other jobs dependent on being on the job to feed a family, paying for the meds vs lost wages due to time off isn't even comparable.

As a child I got the flu and was given tamiflu. I had hallucinatory dreams that I still remember to this day. I was so messed up from the dreams that I had to start riding the bus home to my grandmas house instead of going home where I was alone for 10-15 minutes, max. I had what adults identify as a nervous breakdown in the kitchen screaming and crying in fear before running down the street to my neighbors house. This was all because of the hallucinations I was having in the middle of the night on Tamiflu as an 8 year old. I thought there were people hiding in the chimney or walls of our home. Beyond the logistical change, my grandma took me to talk to a priest who taught me prayers for fear, and gave me rosary bracelets and other trinkets to help comfort me when I was scared. It honestly took me a good year to start riding the bus home and staying by myself for a few minutes again.

As an adult? I took it a few years ago when I got A strand. I got some within 12 hours of symptom onset, so within a day of taking it I felt slightly less death-ish. Prior to that, nothing was touching my fever, aches and chills. I believe it can help to an extent; but probably only if you start taking it very soon after the onset of your symptoms.

My oldest kid got h1n1 as an 8 month old. Then a month later, he contracted the B strand. I was so desperate to help him that I begged the pediatrician for Tamiflu. She didn't really want to, but decided to let us try. Kid projectile vomited it within 30 seconds of taking it, and refused another dosage. And he was always fine with taking meds. So, we didn't try again for fear that it would do more harm than good.

Long story long, thats my experience.

The wife and I can’t keep tamiflu down. We puke it up.

The nausea it creates is pretty rough.

The one script I took a few years ago, it worked. Insurance covered. Had flu this year, but too late for a script. Found that Alka Seltzer Severe Cold and flu along with Brandy got me through.

Not safe for this cowboy. Took that shite and had a major psychotic episode. Found myself huddled in the corner of a room believing the world was crashing in on me. Threw the remaining doses away and recovered my senses in about 12 hours.

I’ve done a lot of illegal drugs that never did anything like that to me. The fake weed they sold at convenience stores a few years ago was interesting—basically slowed down everything around me until it wore off. But, it wasn’t as bad as Tamiflu.

Afterwards, I looked up Tamiflu and discovered my symptoms are a known, possible side effect. FWIW, YMMV, YOLO, etc.

It's not safe.

Side effects of Tamiflu include convulsions, delirium and delusions. The death of five Japanese children and seven adults has been linked to the drug. Disturbingly, a 2009 study found more than half of all children taking Tamiflu experience side effects, including neuropsychological effects such as altered behavior and nightmares. Other rare side effects such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and blindness have also been reported
