Getting old is hell. I've been using eyeglasses for last four or so years to see better at night. That became seeing better distances during day, which I've been doing the oh so cool looking overlay sunglasses.

I've decided it's probably best time to move on to prescription sunglasses.

My eyeglasses are covered by my vision insurance, but I'll be buying these out of pocket.

So give me some ideas of places to go, costs, what you like, etc.

I don't need anything fancy or designer.

They have prescription lenses and can be worn in the sun.

and if you think deteriorating vision relevant to your age is bad, wait till other age-related maladies start.

Life changing for me. I spent the money and got the best lenses and coatings. Don't scrimp on quality. This is one of those things it's worth it to splurge on.

Glasses are kind of a get what you pay for.

Go to a visionworks and just at least try on some models. Not saying to buy there but you dont just want to buy online and have them not feel good on your head when you get them.

Dont go cheap. This isnt paper towels. Its your eyes and comfort all day long seeing

I bought a pair of polarized no line bifocals at JC Penney for less than $200. It’s not costa’s but it does the job.

Yeah, you do.

My wife wears glasses, here is what she does. She gets her yearly eye exam and if the lense prescription hasn't changed from the previous year, she then gets prescription sunglass lenses that year. Insurance covers the lenses, but the not the frames. This is where you pony up for some ray ban frames.

Boom. Prescription sunglasses in a quality stylish frame for a couple hundred dollars.

Do what you will but I encourage you to get them polarized as well.

If you're already going to the eye doctor and don't need anything fancy, ask them about their cheapest frames. Likely something that isn't on the floor. I did this to buy a knock around pair of glasses. When you order the lenses, request they be polarized. You could probably get away for <$200 going this route. Otherwise, designer frames will push you into the $400 range. I went with Maui Jim; I really like them, but I may opt for something cheaper like I just mentioned next time.

You shouldn’t step on them.

Maybe he should buy some Amber vision glasses.

He could look like Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueler's Day Off

They be expensive.

I bought some from Warby Parker a few years ago. At the time they seemed fairly reasonably priced. Think I paid around $250-$300 for frames and polarized lenses - single vision. Progressives were a bit more.

I was way off. Just found my receipt in my desk drawer and I only paid $125 for them. They’ve been pretty solid.

What are polarized lenses? Why should I get that?

Polarized is darkened lenses. I.e. sunglasses lenses. That's how you specify it on the lens order.

Ordered a pair of Costas in prescription. Expensive but worth it IMO.

Polarized lenses reduce glare. Way better than standard lenses.

the wife takes the script and buys them online, good prices, lots of frame choices, and they take them right back if you don’t like them

I finally bit the bullet and got glasses this year. I went to Lens Crafters (I didn't know where else to go).

154.00 - Ray Ban Frame
466.67 - Progressive Varilux Comfort Max (wide progressive)
255.00 - Poly Photo Transitions - color change in sunlight
125.00 - Photochromic Brown (color)
166.67 - Crizal Rock Anti-Reflective
1167.34 - Total

Paid like 402 out of pocket. Worth every penny except I didn't realize how ugly I was now that I can see lol.
