We played roundup tag. One person would start as "it" (usually whoever won the last game). Anyone you tagged would also be "it" until all but 1 was it. That person was the winner.

This also makes a great open field tackling drill for contact sports.

Do kids still play a version of prison ball? Like dodge ball except if hit you go to the area behind the opposing team to try and get out of prison by hitting an opposing player with the ball.

Kiss chase

This was all the rage in kindergarten, which seems odd looking back now.

Kickball

This was a fricking staple all throughout elementary school. That and basketball were my go-to recess activities.

Red rover

We played this a good bit too, but especially on field day.

ETA: Like someone else said, tag and freeze tag are two different games. Both were awesome, but I preferred freeze tag.

We played this sometimes but mostly just tag and you're out. Freeze works better with more players.

We played a game called German Spotlight.

Same principle as Tag but a much bigger playing field you used a high powered flashlight to "tag" someone.

Tennis ball tag ftw.

You were allowed to use garbage can lids as a shield.

We played a game after church, at night, called “Kizzy lights”. When a car drove by you had to dive on the ground. If the lights hit you, you were Kizzy (from “Roots”, for you young folk).

We played Ghost Time, not tag

The 70s were an amazing time to be a kid. Free range, inventing dangerous games, etc.

We played this frequently, but called it "multiplication tag." We set a pretty long lead time to hide within a large but defined area to start.

Jail break

2 teams....2 jails.....none of this touch stuff and go to jail. Wholesale tackling with 3 count on a crowded playground.

Neck tackles allowed

The game most often played when the football/dodgeball/kickball was commandeered by the teacher and who the frick wants to just stand there the last 3 minutes of recess.
