737 emergency landing on a levee

While going down a YouTube rabbit hole, I ran across this story. In 1988, a 737 on approach to New Orleans has a double engine flameout. The pilot sticks the landing on a levee near New Orleans.

Any posters on here remember this story?

Yes, landed in New Orleans East if I recall. Good job by the pilots. I thought they ran out of fuel though......

I don’t remember the story but I did fly TACA a few times to Mexico or British Honduras. The joke was that it stood for Take A Chance Airline so your story is not a surprise.

The pilot was named Dardano. I know his son who is now a pilot.

Saw an Air Disasters about it. They changed out the engines and flew it back out of there. That’s pretty amazing.

The pilot did a helluva job landing it there. He was Sully before Sully.

Landed at the Michoud Assembly Facility along the intercoastal canal. He ran into a hail storm that knocked out the engines. It was raining very heavy on the ground when he touched down. Heard the story from a guys that worked there back then. He was working at one of the buildings near the levy taking a smoke and said all of a sudden a silent jet went by and set down on the grass not far from where he was.

They towed it out of the grass, took out all the seats, put new engines on and just enough fuel to make Moisant. Said it took off like a rocket and flew over the green monster on its way out.

That will wake you up.
Mess it just an open field? Lucky it didn’t get stuck.

Flew taca to Belize in 1992. Great flight. Drinking, smoking cigs, while federal agents bring 6-10 deportees in cuffs on to plane. Uncuffed and left the plane. Believe plane was headed to Honduras on second leg.

Flew TACA a lot years back. We always called it Take A Chance Again Airlines. Had landings in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador that I don't care to go through again, ever.

Flew Taca once for honeymoon going into Belize than a hop to Honduras.

It was maybe one of the more enjoyable flights I’ve had.

Cocktails at 8am right after takeoff, daily news paper to read and more cocktails when close to landing. I was 18 and loved TACA.

Amazing job by the pilots. That plane was only about a month old. It flew for TACA for a while after and then with Southwest for a few years until they retired it in 2017.

The captain was blind in one eye after being wounded during the El Salvador civil war.
