Scientists have invented a synthetic protein designed to control the inner workings of cells. In a pair of papers, published yesterday (July 24) in Nature, the researchers demonstrate how the tool can be used to tweak gene expression, orchestrate protein binding events, and cue functional changes in the cell in response to environmental conditions.

Some of you science boys explain the functionality/impact of this to me like I was 10 years old.

That’s what I was afraid of, just needed confirmation. Thanks, Bill Nye.

I saw an article the other day about How they figured out how to hide cancer drugs inside sugar molecules. The hungry cancer cells absorb them. They can get a better response using smaller amounts with fewer side effects.

For some reason I at the prospect of cancer drugs playing hide & seek and then destroy.

Okay. You have a lot of genes. So many of them that if they weren’t compressed there wouldn’t be much room in the cell for much else.

Additionally, because it’s wasteful to spend energy and building blocks on stuff you don’t need, everything is regulated.

One example of this is lactose intolerance: the genes associated with digesting lactose get permanently disabled and packed away. It isn’t a disease, it’s “natural.” Mammals aren’t “supposed” to consume dairy past childhood.

They have produced an artificial protein that can bind (temporarily) to one of these regulatory systems and change its function.

The advantage of the synthetic thing is that you can trigger something, without overloading the cell with the natural trigger, which might be unrealistic and/or have undesired effects.

Seems like it would be possible to design a control scheme for gene expression with this (down the road obv).

No, it’s more of the sense that they feed off sugar

Truly believe that,I have gay uncle,my mother’s younger brother.Mother said it was obvious from time he was toddler,he wasn’t interested in his boy toys.Wanted to play with her dolls, doll buggy, etc.I have couple gay cousins also,no rhyme or reason for them to be gay that I could see. Both grew up in normal families with involved fathers.I’ve gotten into some heated arguments with people ridiculing gay people, calling them perverts etc.In my mind,it’s clearly mental illness of some sort,at the same time I don’t think it should be celebrated with Gay Pride week, parades, all that.

For the record.. I have no idea of the accuracy of this next statement....

Humans are the only mammals that continue to consume "dairy products" (as in milk...) after infancy...

As a result the thinking is that we are not "supposed" to ...
