Suit Recommendation

I'm in a buddy's wedding who has told the groomsmen to "just wear a black suit". He likely doesn't own a suit and honestly thinks that black is the go-to suit that everyone has in their closet. Unfortunately, I'm not a magician, undertaker, or door-to-door vacuum salesman, so I don't own a black suit.
Looking for recommendations for a decent looking suit that's not going to break the bank.
I'm also going to be attending a black-tie wedding here in a few weeks and my 3-button tux is a bit outdated and extremely loose fitting.
Anyway to combine these events with maybe something a little nicer?

Spot on with the black suit description.
You’are likely not going to wear it often, so I wouldn’t break the bank.
Jos A Bank’s 1905 collection isn’t bad for a budget suit. Look at Macy’s house label (whatever it is now). If you wait for a sale, you could probably get one for under $250. For a black suit you’ll rarely wear, that’s not a terrible price

So y'all are going to be wearing mismatch suits? Tell your buddy to have anlt least an ounce of class and y'all rent the same ones

If you can find a Sears still open I’m sure they probably have killer deals on suits

It's going to be tacky AF.
I would be thrilled to have an excuse to buy a new suit, now I've gotta buy a freaking black suit....I'm not happy.

I may be hitting goodwill TBH. Drop $40 and try to get a tailor to work some magic.
I would like a new tuxedo as I mentioned above, so would like to buy one of those....but nope, we're going with the standard black suit. Because it's 1986 again.

Don’t try to pass a black suit off as a tux.

The groom bride combo is tilting the scales at about 45 stone...

Don’t show up the groom! Even if he is trashy

If the second wedding is black tie and not black tie optional, you’ll need a tux for it.
What type of build are you? I’m only asking because Banana Republic actually has pretty nice off the rack suits for around $500, but they tend to fit slimmer people better.

Jos A Bank currently has a big sale going on. A lot of 89-100 suits and tuxedos.

5'11 175, I have a J Crew Ludlow and a BR suit that fit pretty well. But honestly, I don't really want to spend $400+ on this thing. Heck, I may rent one.
The other wedding is black tie optional. I wouldn't go suit to a strictly formal event.

I ordered a wool from Jos A bank last week on clearance.
Reg price: $858
Purchased at: $89 w/free shipping

A cheaper suit that your have tailored > a more expensive suit that you don't. My wedding tux and groomsmen suits were $150/pop but the shop gives lifetime tailoring.. makes a world of difference.

In society weddings they're expected to be slightly mismatched because you're wearing formal attire that you own, not something you rented for the occasion. I'm surprised the OT doesn't know that.

I’ve never heard of renting a suit. But I’m guessing you’ll spend well over $100 to do it.
It honestly makes more sense to buy a suit at that point.
