I want to purchase a UPS battery backup surge protector for my computer, but have read complaints from some that they have had smoking problems. Fire is a concern of mine. I have already lost a house to a house fire.

I recently discovered these really cool balls that put out fires.

Thinking about mounting one above any electrical device that I would be concerned about.

What other kind of fire would you lose a house to? A Fire Woman, maybe

Won't stop a lithium battery fire in all likelihood.

Goin green baby

Jokes aside. I work with someone who had a lithium battery powered vacuum blow up in their house. They lost everything.

That being said there’s a huge market opportunity for fire extinguishers strictly for these batteries. My company is working on this right now.

Yeah, seems like they are a different beast.

I would need protection against lead acid batteries.

I did read that lead acid batteries are sometimes safer than lithium.

However when it comes to lithium.

quote:

Lithium rechargeable batteries are finicky, and there's lots of ways to make them angry through normal use.

If you drain them of too much power and try to recharge them, they can catch on fire or explode.

If you overcharge or charge them too fast, they can catch on fire or explode.

If you suck too much current from them or make them too hot, believe it or not, they can catch on fire or explode.

That's why its critical for for most lithium batteries or their devices have a built-in protection to limit these risks. Usually a circuit board that makes sure the battery is getting charged the right amount, doesn't get discharged too fast or too much when in use, and in-case of large multi-cell packs like this ebike battery that each cell gets recharged and discharged at the same rate & amount so there's no imbalance (which will also risk fire or explosion).

A cheap or defective battery protection circuit - or in a lot of cases just cheap, defective lithium batteries - will lead to what you saw above.

Looks like lithium batteries may not be allowed on elevators for this very reason?

Yup. I make some stuff out of used NMC cells but they’re all industrial or EV grade. Wouldn’t touch the junk they put in e-bikes and other toys. Also would only recommend LiFePO4 to anyone inexperienced.
What a crappy place for that to happen though.
I bought an ebike for turkey hunting and running around the property. It wasn't cheap but it is china-made, I park that sumbitch 75 feet away from the house at night for this exact reason.

But the 350 Chinese headlamps I have scattered across the house from over the years sometimes keep me up at night.

Damn, bro. Sorry I stole your thunder.

It is wild how in our world everything old really is new again at some point. I saw those a while back and immediately thought about the antique glass fire extinguisher balls folks used to have. I bought a couple probably fifteen years ago and sold them to a firefighter friend of mine who collects fire stuff.

From what I understand, it doesn't matter if the device is off. They can still combust, even if they're not charged.

There’s a reason they’ve been banning those damn things from buildings in Asia. Those cheap arse batteries are bad news.

There's a reason why packing them in your check luggage when flying is a major felony.

I've collected those batteries in my house and put them where I would think is a safer place after my brother's One Wheel ignited. Burned half of his house before they could put it out.
