I've put 3 down in the last 10 years. It never gets any easier.

They love you so much and trust you so much and watching the light go out in their eyes is something I'll never ever get used to.

Had to put down my sweet 13 year old terrier two years.
Gathered up the kids from all over and we went together.
Cried like a baby.

Have 2 left.........a 16 year old chihuahua who is going down hard.

And my best buddy........my blind 12 year old Boston Terrier. I look at him and know its gonna kill me when he goes.

We have been thru alot together.

Losing the good puppy dog is the worst.

Prayers sent! It is the most awful yet so loving thing I have ever done.

When my current 6-year old 50 lb rescue reaches this stage her life it will break me! She is my best friend and best pet I’ve ever had in my life thus far. She doesn’t officially belong in the therapy dog category, but she has been my therapy dog dealing with being disabled from cancer.

Yeah the worst is when they get over 10 and you know this day is coming up soon.

One of the hardest decisions that I ever had to make. Mine maybe had a few days left in him, but he was refusing to eat / drink water for days so we made the incredibly tough decision to put him to sleep.

The hardest part was when I was laying down with him during his last minutes and the vet had the shot ready to go, I was the one who had to say "do it".

I am sorry for your loss.

Putting your dog down is one of the worst days ever. Of course it gets better, but it still hurts. All dog owners know that day is coming.

Hang in there

My best friend passed a couple years ago. Haven’t been the same since. Miss him every day.

At least you had him that long. Wouldn’t change a thing.

A truer statement has never been made.

I had all of our old home movies from the 80's and 90's digitized. In one from from 1985 was my all-time favorite dog. That video, no lie, was hard to watch as it was her and I playing in the back yard. I was a teen when we had her and she got me through some rough times. While I've had dogs almost constantly when I could, she was my favorite of them all. Here is a screen shot from 1985. RIP Dixie.

You sure that cats automatically get into heaven?

I had a cat who I wouldn’t think was in heaven if I actually believed in heaven.

My heart truly goes out to you. I know how hard it is. We had our sweet boy for 17 years. He was my best buddy. Rescued him when he was just a little guy. Both he and my kids grew up right alongside each other.

As many here have mentioned, he was the one constant in my life when there was a lot of crazy going on. I could always count on that warm, damp muzzle of his to nudge and perk me up whenever I was feeling down. He was right there in the bed with my mother when she passed away at hospice. Her hand was resting right on his fur as she crossed over. That dog was all heart. But it wasn’t his heart that finally gave out. It was his mind.

After 17 years he was still physically in great shape but the mind had started to go. He would just stand in corners staring, lost, not knowing where he was or how to back out of them. We called it “dogzeimers”. I told my husband that when the time came I didn’t think I would have the heart to do it. He understood. One day I went to do my errands and decided to swing by Lowe’s on the way home. I noticed my husband‘s car there in the parking lot. I figured he must be back in the kitchen section talking to the guys since we were in the process of renovating ours. Typically whenever he went to Lowe’s, he would bring the dog with him so I assumed this day would be no different. I waltzed over to the kitchen section and sure enough there was my husband talking to the salesman. But no dog. I asked him if he had left the dog back at home. A strange look passed over his face as he replied “no”. So I asked where the dog was. He just responded “He’s out in my jeep”. I told him I just passed the jeep walking into Lowe’s and no dog was in there. He assured me that he was. I began to worry, telling him the dog must’ve jumped out or something. That’s when he pulled me over and confessed what he had done. He was scheduled to leave on an upcoming trip the next day and could tell that it was time. The poor dog just was not having any quality of life due to his mental issues. Husband knew what needed to be done and he knew he was gonna have to be the one to do it. So he scooped up my best buddy, drove over to the vet and held the dog in his lap as they put him down.

I was absolutely livid. I broke down right there in the store, yelling at him for his seeming coldness about it all. I was extremely upset because I still wasn’t ready to part with my best friend, even though I too realized that the sad task needed to be done sooner rather than later. Once I finally settled down, I drove back home and watched as my husband dug a hole under the dog‘s favorite tree and placed the cardboard box with his remains in it, then covered it back up.

That tree is right next to our driveway. So every time I pull out of the driveway I would see that spot under that tree and think of my little pal. Then one day around Easter the next year I noticed something bright and orange under the tree as I exited the driveway - wild tiger lilies were growing right there on the exact same spot where the dog had been buried. And nowhere else in the yard. It was the weirdest thing, but it was beautiful. It’s been nine years now and every year since then around Easter time, a lovely bouquet of volunteer tiger lilies bloom right there under the tree in the exact same spot where my sweet dog is buried. I don’t know how and I don’t know why. My husband definitely did not plant them there…nor did I. firmly believe that those flowers are a final gift from my four-legged bestie - reaching out to me as a final gesture of comfort and letting me know he’s fine and is patiently waiting there for me and my lap on the other side of that rainbow bridge.

I put down my first mini dachshund when he was 17. Got another that's currently 12...he has a good bit of gray on the muzzle, but he gets around like he's still a pup. My advice to all dog owners is to buy decent, if not good foods. Stay away from the Ol' Roy in the 50 lb bag.

Sorry you’re a soy boy snowflake who needs to cry to other adult males when your dog dies. Putting a dog down is terrible. But man up. We grew up reading Old Yeller. Part of being a man is going through this.

Bunch of grown men on here acting like wimps while making fun of other soy boys.

What’s next? You’ll need a support day off of work to grieve? Man up.

I worked as a vet tech for two summers in high school. I assisted in euthanizing dozens of animals. I didn’t understand it at the time because I had never become attached to a pet, but I was definitely surprised when most people didn’t want their pet’s remains. I won’t tell you what we did with them. Laws on disposal of animal remains are likely stricter now.

My two pups died in 2022 and 2023. They were both 12. Had them since 8 weeks. Just like you, I dug their graves in the backyard and laid them in.
