Consumers looking for a long-lasting vehicle that can reach 200,000 miles or more should consider an SUV, according to a new study by car search engine iSeeCars.com. The findings reveal that seven out of the 10 vehicles most likely to last 200,000 miles are SUVs, while the remainder of the list includes one vehicle in each of the pickup, passenger car, and minivan categories.

In iSeeCars.com’s analysis of more than 13.5 million cars sold in 2017, the Toyota Sequoia ranks first with 6.6 percent of its cars over 200,000 miles. At least 2.4 percent of all of the models on the top 10 list have over 200,000 miles, which is double the 1.2 percent average for all models.

"While today’s vehicles have the potential to reach 200,000 miles with proper maintenance and care, certain models are far more likely to achieve that milestone,” said iSeeCars.com CEO Phong Ly. “Five of the seven SUVs on the list are made by domestic automakers, which demonstrates the durability of American SUVs.”

quote:

SUVs from Toyota, General Motors, and Ford dominate the list of the longest-lasting light-duty vehicles, earning the top seven spots. The SUVs comprising the list are exclusively full-size with the exception of the mid-size Toyota 4Runner. On average, these SUVs are nearly four times as likely to reach 200,000 miles than the average vehicle.

“These large SUVs feature body-on-frame construction, which means they are built like trucks and thus have truck-like durability,” said Ly. “These vehicles can also be easier to repair than smaller SUVs, which can contribute to their longevity.”

4 of the 10 most likely were General Motors products
4 of the 10 most likely were Toyota products
Ford and Honda each had an entry
Chrysler, Nissan, and VW didn't make the top 10

When narrowed down to trucks only, Toyota and General Motors dominate the list.

Acura, Volvo, and Cadillac dominate when narrowed down to luxury vehicles.

My 2012 Tacoma is still running like a top at 135k. I plan on keeping it well over 200k if I can.

An Escalade is a status symbol in the hood. This should be excluded on GP.

They exclude 3/4 ton trucks and full sized vans, which would otherwise dominate the list.

figured. And really this is probably more of a study of what cars people actually drive and sell at 200k. Usually by 200k, parts are worth more and no one buys, so they go to scrap.

It's not uncommon for audi 4.2l motors to reach 400k miles. It's the maintenance on the rest of the car that's a killer.

This appears particularly true if it is a body on frame SUV from Toyota or GM.

The question is this: Does the Chevy Suburban or Toyota Sequoia owner have a superior philosophy on maintenance or are they built that much better? or both?

My last two Yukon's went well over 200k, the Sierra I have now, not looking good at 75k.

I usually trade mine in before it hits 100k. It takes me about 8-9 years to put 75k on a vehicle and I'm sick of it by then
