A student walking on LSU's campus was hit by a vehicle Monday morning on the university's first day of classes for the fall semester, said LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard III.

The pedestrian was injured ... after stepping out into the path of the vehicle ... The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

The student was transported to a local hospital with moderate to severe injuries, Ballard said.

Ballard said speed nor impairment was a factor in the crash.

WELCOME BACK, STUDENTS!

Sounds like they've learned their first lesson in college.

Probably an out of state student from somewhere that obeys traffic laws.

Nevermind, too stupid to graduate anyway

basic rules of common sense like look both ways before stepping out into traffic are such old fashioned notions

It always amazed me how kids would just cross the street at lsu and expect cars to stop. Frick that. I made damn sure the car was stopping before I crossed, especially in a crosswalk.

There was a rumor a couple of years ago that that earned free tuition.

Can't say I didn't think about pulling the trigger on that once or twice.

Probably a bit of texting and driving mixed with texting and walking.

Crazy to see how man students walk straight into the road with their head down in their phone. My company did some work on LSU's campus last year and it was a very frequent occurrence.

that's the way pedestrians in TX are, yes, it's the law that they have the right of way but the vehicle will always win, and to prove they are right might possibly mean their survivors may receive a cash settlement awarded by a judge or negotiated by an insurance company

I was on a campus recently and noticed that now have these signs that warn against walking and texting.

I had no idea that this issue had gotten to the point to where where have to have public service announcements about how people shouldn't stare at their phones while walking down the street.

If it was on Highland or Nicholson that's one thing. One of the streets in the core of campus, drivers ought to be aware of pedestrians, in crosswalks or not.

ETA I hope the driver and/or victim wasn't in a fraternity.

Hope they're okay, but revoke their acceptance.

It used to be left right left, then they changed it up to right left right. I don't blame the pedestrian, it can be confusing.

Back in 2006, I saved someone from being hit by a bus on campus. Pedestrian stepped into the same cross walk I was about to enter when I noticed a bus wasn't slowing down for us. I grabbed the student's backpack and pulled them back to the curb just as a bus blew through the crosswalk.
