I well remember the strong El Nino in 1976 aftermath. Massive crop failure in Russia and the need to buy massive amounts of grain from the USA in 1977. A high school classmate then working on a US tanker had his shipped used to haul grain to Russia.

US farmers made bank.

Well, it seems like they would want the farmers of Ukraine to get back to farming instead of defending their country…..unless Russia wants to buy grain from the US!

I like The Nino if it keeps the 'canes away. I like Saharan dust and wind shear, too.

And frick the Commies.

I seem to remember farmers everywhere going bankrupt in the late 70s? Cause that was when catfish farming really took off here making big money and it saved a shite ton of delta farmers from going broke

That was the 1980s when Reagan drastically cut USAID purchases to give it away by the shipload. It definitely impacted rice farmers due drastic price drop. The farmers who thought that good profits would last and borrowed to spend money were severely hurt.

The Cadillac dealership, in Lake Charles was also hurt. When growing rice was highly profitable, the Wilson Motors salesmen would call up their rice farmer wife clients when the new models came out, get an order then drive the new car to the farm to pick up a personal check and drive back the recent model (often last year) to the dealership.

Weather smack. Love it.

El Niño is good for the southern plains and central/south Texas. Lakes have been drying up… Bring it on.

Just because we are in an El Nino it doesnt mean we cant have hurricanes.

I think I saw on Accuweather X post that all Cat5 storms in the last 150 years were all El Nino years.

NOT WISHCASTING

But while the numbers of storms go down for storms it doesnt make it impossible for storms to form. I certainly hope we go another year without a Gulf storm but we still need to keep an eye on things.

I think the following were all El Nino years:

Betsy 1965
Camille 1969
Idalia 2023
Milton 2024.

Im sure the downvotes will rain but nobody should assume nothing is going to happen.

AGAIN I am not hoping for a storm.

A friend of mine who lives in Indiana a few miles north of where the tornados were yesterday got almost 5 inches of rain yesterday.
