It's bacterial and it will keep getting worse unless you go get penicillin

You gotta go to the doctor. I tried toughing it out once when I thought what was a sinus infection migrated to my throat. I get SI’s twice a year, so no big deal, took my ibuprofen and claritin d and things cleared a little until a week later my neck and traps locked up and I still felt bad, but no sore throat or headache. I went to the doctor thinking oh shite, I may have meningitis, but after testing, it was strep.

If you are healthy, you might get better without antibiotics in a week or so. There is a small chance you could get seriously ill by not treating it.

However...you should consider that you are putting others at risk by being a walking hot zone for 2 weeks. If you have any contact at all with very young or old people, cough up the doctor’s fee. Strep can be serious for little kids and the elderly.

Amoxicillin or penicillin is just $4 at lots of pharmacies.

People running for medical help for every little fricking thing is one of the reasons health care costs and insurance are out of control. Its also one of the reasons people are getting sicker and sicker and their immune system sucks. Your body needs to learn how to fight infection without the help of drugs otherwise it never gets the proper practice it needs and youll always get sick.

Its a self feeding system. Dont contribute to it. Lay your arse on the couch and let your immune system do its job.

It's strep throat not a cold, genius. It's contagious for at least a couple weeks if you don't take an antibiotic.

Strep throat can be pretty serious if left unchecked, I think. I would go to the doctor. And $150 for a doctor visit? What crap health insurance do you have?

Dayquil it for a couple days, if it doesn't get any better, call mdlive or teledoctor and they'll call you in a ZPack.

ETA: No way he has any idea if it's actually strep.

I agree in that respect I wasn't talking about strep specifically. I was speaking more in generalities

Zpak would not be a good choice for strep at all unless he has a penicillin allergy.

Azithromycin is so overused. I wish the urgent care docs could give out Zpak labeled placebos during cold season.

You cannot mess with strep because it can manifest and cause serious medical issues. Do not wait, get antibiotics and knock it out. If you don't, you'll be in pain and contagious as long as you have fever. That's also inconsiderate, spreading it to others. After 24 hours on antibiotics you're not considered contagious and usually back to feeling pretty decent.

If you actually have Strep throat (less likely), you absolutely should not tough it out. Untreated Strep throat can lead to worse things down the road. But if it's viral pharyngitis (more likely), there's nothing much to do for it besides treat the symptoms.

I got strep a few months ago for the first time in my life. That crap was so painful for my throat, coupled with the high fever and chills. I don't even understand why you would want to wait. Going to the doctor for a cold is stupid, but going to the doctor for strep is extremely necessary.

FWIW, I am raising three kids who are nearing their teens right now. They have collectively gotten an official strep diagnosis somewhere around 12 times during their lives. Obviously, they were (are) more susceptible as children, but it still averages out to around a 1 in 3 chance that a kid will contract strep in a given year. Probably a higher probability because assholes like you have shitty insurance.

Just go to the CVS Doc-In-A-Box. They're pretty good and reasonably cheap.

You need to get it treated. You can get complications such as rheumatic fever.
