Hurricane Frederic September 1979. Had hurricane force winds here in East Central MS. It blew down our TV antenna. My dad had a mega antenna that could pick up all the stations in New Orleans, Birmingham, Mobile, Memphis, etc. We were huge Saints and Archie fans and always watched Buddy D on WWL channel 8. Anyway, I remember my 7 year old self watching my old man remount the antenna. This was a Thursday, and he had to get it back running for the Saturday college games and Sunday NFL games.

Winter of 48-49. Un-ending snow and cold with a blizzard that required the Army to be shipped in on the rail 25 miles away to come and plow things out with bulldozers.
Military weasels were used for some evacuations etc. Snow was piled over top of the telephone poles. Ski planes flew patrol over the homesteads to look for signs of need. Radio instructions instructed the isolated people to stamp out letters in the snow and fill them with ashes to promote visibility. Letters like "X", "V", "L", each meant food fuel or medical aid etc.
Flying boxcars were loaded with baled hay to be dropped to starving livestock. It was weeks before some of the people were able to get to town for supplies.

My first memory was hurricane Camille and my most vivid memory was listening to the radio as it made landfall. My grandfather was most concerned about how many cows were going to die!

Hurricane Alicia = August 1983. Eye went over Houston. Was living in West University at the time and we were without power for weeks and had to stay with relatives on west side of town ( near Westchase Business District District). Storm damaged numerous windows downtown (many just finished in 1983)…

Hurricane Lili is the first storm I remember. I was 5 so I don’t remember much, but I remember the overcast and wind. Wasn’t that bad where I lived either.

Andrew for me.

My family and several of my relatives all hunkered down at my grandfather’s house. I remember going out in the street at some point with skateboards and umbrellas to ride the wind down the street….which was fun until you had to walk back up the street against the wind.

Andrew Remember going outside during the eye and playing basketball with my friends. Then mom was yelling at us to come back inside before it got going again.

Too young for Betsy and Camille, but heard lots of bad stories about both. I was 1 yr 3 months when Camille hit.

No recall, just family expressing the damage and rebuild in my later years. Kinda weird not knowing what takes place when alive...

Andrew. Ride it out on a OSV tied up in Bayou Teche. My dad said the boat’s wind gauge blew off at 200mph. 2 weeks no power. Crazy damage. 85F in the house at night. Miserable.

Alicia '83 for me too. I was 8 at the time.

We were living near College Station at the time while and my grandparents from Houston evacuated to our home.

When the eye passed overhead, my grandfather took me to an ice cream place near our home. By the time we were on our way back, the eye wall was passing over and our car was rocking back and forth. I was pretty scared and he apologized profusely to me and my parents when we got back.

The ice cream was good though.

Betsy in 1965 came straight up the Mississippi River. I was 13 and the walls on our Cypress wood house were flexing until we nailed interior doors to the wall and floor at angles to stop the flex. We were a prayer away from death!

Andrew. My family had just moved to Louisiana and we didn’t know anything about hurricanes. I sat on the front porch for hours watching the storm in BR. It also gave me time to do the summer reading i didn’t know about until the first day of school because they didn’t give you summer work in my old school.

Dis right here. First one that I grasped the concept of damage was Opal. I loved the blizzard of 93, would of hated it if I wasn’t a kid though.
