Local weathermen are reporting the situation in Charleston is going to be worse than Hurricane Hugo in 89.

Have three neighbors all staying put. Told me that they heard it would be no bigger than Cat 1 when it hits off the coast of Chucktown.

I just can't see it weakening that much when it gets here, plus the rain and surge are what i'm scared of... the wind not so much.

Anyone have a clue as to when Charleston will probably lose power tomorrow? The rain is supposed to start in the morning with the heavier stuff in the afternoon/evening, but I just want to try and get as much shite done before blackout.

Good luck to you over there. I left town with my pups and will journey to Biloxi tomorrow. Hope Charleston has power when I return.

The category of the storm is only the wind speed, nothing of the surge. This storm is bringing a huge surge with it. Also, the west side of the storm carries most of the rain (I think).

I kinda get the thrill of staying. But what people don't consider is the miserable situation that will likely follow. 90% chance you have no power, no water, poor cell service, etc for the next several days. And it will be very difficult to leave.

No clue, but things could get bad in SC and NC, depending on track. There looks to be a significant threat for flooding as models are showing rainfall totals in the 12"+ range for some areas. As the system tracks north, the rainfall pattern will be pretty typical with max totals to the right of the track. As it gets farther north and makes the turn, then max rainfall will transition to left of track. That puts parts of SC and NC on the "bad" side of the system, at that point.

I have a suite, you're welcome to crash on my couch, you just have to get the dogs off of it. Bonus, they rarely bark.

What if it skirts land and goes back out. Can it recover its strength or is it pretty much weaking from then on. Thanks in advance

Yes, the less interaction with land the stronger the system will stay. However, at this time, the models are not showing a very favorable environment for the storm as it loops and heads back towards the Gulf. That could change, but models are currently showing steady weakening during the loop.

All of you disparaging Nicole should be ashamed. She's a chaste, beautiful storm with a good heart.

Looks like the outer eye wall is continuing to swallow up the inner eye on radar.

The 18z GFS is projecting an 8 AM Saturday landfall or near landfall near the central SC coast, but the storm will be weakening by then. The GFS also projects that Matthew will miss any landfall in FL along the way.

We'll have some more models in the next 2-3 hours though.

Thanks, I was thinking more short term. Like makes landfall in Florida and only stays over land 4 hrs then gets back over open water and heads north toward SC

My cousin lives there(St. John's Island), and is staying. She doesn't seem concerned at all.

Bad in the long term. The process essentially keeps the storm from strengthening too much more. Once it is complete, it can go back to strengthening, but it isn't necessarily a guarantee that will happen either. It simply makes it more favorable than it otherwise would be. It also tends to create a larger eye and a wider wind field as a result.
