At least you'll be alive to come back. Stay safe and get out.

Yes i have heard that roar before. Probably one of the scariest things ive ever heard.

I was a little kid in Pensacola when Camille came roaring ashore. We weren't close to where it made landfall and it was still a terrifying sound.

I feel so stupid having attempted to understand this.

I'm not always the best at explaining, so lemme try again.

Imagine you have a car that's moving down the road at a certain speed and it hits a wall and stops, delivering all of its energy into the wall. There's a long line of cars and they're spaced out so that one car hits the wall every second. So, the power the wall absorbs is one car's worth of kinetic energy per second.

Now, double the speed of the line of cars. Kinetic energy is equal to 1/2*m*v^2. Since the cars are all identical and the mass doesn't change, when we double the velocity and keep everything else equal, the kinetic energy of each car is four times what it was at the original speed. But, the line of cars is now moving twice as fast, so in one second two cars can hit the wall instead of one. Since each car is delivering four times the energy into the wall as they were at the original speed, the wall is absorbing 8 times the power from the never-ending stream of cars than it was at the original speed.

Replace cars with wind and walls with... well, walls, and the idea is the same.

Maybe I'm being hopeful here, and I know these things bounce around...

Does it look like the eye is moving more NNW than NW to anyone else in the final 3 frames or so?

Doesn't look like it will strengthen any at all in my opinion. If anything it could very well gradually weaken going forward. Also in other good news it is definitely moving more north than west currently. I'm hoping this trend will continue and it misses the coast altogether. Cautiously optimistic here in Orlando. I think we may be looking at much less winds than anticipated earlier. -Down from 90 to about 50-60 mph gusts in my opinion, if trends continue.

That's true, but the power of a wind field increases with the CUBE of the velocity, not the square. The kinetic energy of a given chunk of wind quadruples if you double the velocity, but power is the rate of energy delivered. While each chunk of wind has four times the energy if you double the velocity, they're moving twice as fast so TWO chunks of wind slam into you in the same amount of time that one chunk would hit you at the original velocity. So, double the velocity and the POWER delivered by the wind is EIGHT times what it was at the original velocity, and that's a cube law.

155^3/145^3 = 1.22, so the increase in power delivered is actually 22%.

It has that skull look to it like it did when it approached Haiti except it's an upside down skull now.

2.30pm: HURRICANE Matthew brought down many trees across New Providence, leaving residents to have to clear driveways and roads once the all clear is given.

Residents in Fox Hill Creek are reporting the Eastern Road is blocked by St Anne's Cemetery. The storm surge, coupled with a high tide, brought waters over the top of the wall at Fox Hill Creek, the first time any can ever remember that happening.

2pm: THE National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is co-ordinating efforts to rescue and evacuate residents who have found themselves trapped in their homes because of excessive flooding from Hurricane Matthew, the agency said on Thursday.

NEMA is not encouraging people to take it upon themselves to go into flooded communities and rescue people. However, the agency is asking for people with heavy duty trucks and ten wheelers to volunteer their services.

Such people are asked to call NEMA and provide their names and telephone contacts to be added to a list of volunteers. They will receive directions from Lt Commander Freddie Brown of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force regarding the exercise.

NEMA also advised residents to remain indoors and to not wander into flooded streets.

To contact NEMA call 322-6081, 322-6085 or 322-6731.

They're also reporting that the death roll in Haiti is over 100 now.

Has a storm ever done that before? Just do a complete loop and then hit Florida then Mexico? Is that even possible? I've seen storms loop but they always seem to turn north at some point.

Man I hope those forecasts change because Florida doesn't need that.
