There is the distinction. You ASKED. Evidently this kid didn't and just decided to eat the food.
Any teenager eating food to be tossed is nothing more than looking at the kid and saying, “Stop doing that.” Much less a special needs kid.
The frick is wrong with some people.

Disabled has nothing to do with it. One doesn’t get a free pass. He could work, so let’s say he has abilities vs “disabled” or “Autistic.” That said, the mgr was wrong and should have talked to him, and probably sucked to work with. Obviously doesn’t have leadership or people skills.

Bring back public hangings. Bet there'd be a lot less of this going on

Garbage is worth $0.00. If you add 3 months of nothing together, it adds up to nothing.
A neighbor kid worked at a Winn Dixie. The Asst. Manager gave the employees the leftover deli food at night. It had to be consumed in the store, not taken home. The week before he was due a raise, they fired him for eating the deli food he was given.

I used to work in a very small hospital. When there was something good we got very very small portions. At the end of the day, the kitchen staff could be seen taking multiple plastic bags full of to go trays to their cars. Pretty ridiculous.

Where does it say the food was in the trash? Are we spicing up the story for clicks?
Manager should have told him to stop early and leave it at that.

The manager knew about it early on and instead of addressing it, allowed it to continue so he could build a case and have the cops come in and arrest him and take him out of the store in cuffs. And even after a few months, the amount of food amounted to a little over $100.
According to the article, this is apparently store policy

When I worked at Target I saw baskets of “expired” deli products. All thrown out. God forbid the employees get anything free.

Now, was getting law enforcement necessary? Probably not. But we are only getting one side of the story. Regardless, a very basic adage applies: If something doesn't belong to you...don't take it...even if you believe it's not a big deal to take it.
Are you a fricking moron or just get off on being an internet contrarian?

We used to go to McDonald’s 10 minutes before they closed and loaded up on burgers and fries that were going to be tossed away.

As do the cops who cuffed a 16 year old autistic boy. What a disgrace of a society we live in

Never heard of a Meijer but it sounds like somewhere I would likely not shop.

If people only knew how much food is wasted, it's insane.
I worked at a TexMex restaurant, and the amount of fajita meat I've seen tossed because of the food timer. Same with McDonalds. I worked there as well.
Basically, you have so many minutes to serve before you have to toss it. I remember closing up the McDonalds and throwing out a full bucket of burger meat.
It's wasteful and stupid to not let employees eat it.
