Exact opposite for me. I went into a house fire one time when in the coast guard, and got reprimanded. Didn't have the proper ppe, training, etc etc. house was on a river we were patrolling, woman came to the rivers edge screaming bloody murder, and an old guy was still in the house. Fight or flight took over, but I got my arse chewed by a few different folks after that for going in after him.

Y'all keep saying he's up against a guy with a rifle.
Keep in mind he doesn't necessarily have to kill or hit him. He can keep him tied up long enough for more help to arrive or more kids to escape. Just two minutes would make a difference.

In all likelihood, he did what his General Orders book says to do which is ultimately to protect yourself above all else. Cops aren't really trained to act in a manner to jeapordize their own life to save another. But the public was going to find out he wimped out on going in, and the Sheriff had to make a statement.
The chief said he should have ran in and killed the kid.

He had 30+ years of service, I picture Barney Fife trying to find his bullet.

That's the problem, but plenty of teachers have put their lives on the line in all of these shootings.
Some of y'all are fricking dense.

Whoever the three downvotes are obviously don’t know your story. Those of us who do, know you have balls of steel.
It ain’t even about that having balls, it’s about doing what’s right and fighting for yourself and others. When they wanted me to open the door to my friend’s room I told them to kill me then and there because it wasn’t gonna happen. I would have given my life for my friend, there was no doubt in my mind. The only reason I fought for my own life was because I thought I was already dead. I think the cop in this case just valued his life over the lives of the students.
But I appreciate the shite.

You’re braver than most. Your instincts are different than the average man. Just remember, you’re putting more lives in danger by entering the house. I commend you for your courageous act though. And thanks for your service

And this is why arming teachers(which is so ducking stupid in many ways) isn't he answer.
When someone is shooting an AR 15 at people, it takes a special person to be able to keep calm and shoot back. This trained officer of many years couldn't manage to do
It, but people think teachers will
Why do some people keep acting like teachers are these frail little victims shaking in fear? Two of my high school teachers were hardened marines that fought real wars against real enemies. I have no doubt the would have charged that shooter with nothing but a 10 lb social studies book if it meant they were going to save even one student. Teachers are real people, many of whom are capable of exemplary acts of bravery. Now just imagine how many more would step up to the fight if we gave them the tools to even the odds.

Who will pay for the guns, ammo, training, etc too? It's a dumb proposition.
I don't think it's a dumb proposition, though it's not a fool proof silver bullet either.
If this is a priority to the schools and communities, then the $ won't be a problem.

Any first responder knows the rules say not to put yourself in danger to save another.
Any first responder knows you go anyway.

If one of my children was at that school, I would hunt this man down!!!

We had a fat, old sheriff that would fall asleep in the drivers seat of his truck at the entrance to our parking lot.
But he had a handle bar mustache, so I'm pretty sure he could handle his business in this situation.

As a woofer and professional lifeguard in a previous life.... there's no way he didn't know about that cowardice

+1 it's such a ridiculous argument. The teachers I know (mostly women) couldn't hurt a fly. But let's arm them and this will all be fixed

First off, none of this should have been brought public. I think it really, really sucks the school officer didn't go in there, and I definitely think he should have been asked to resign or be fired. The Sheriff though should not have brought those details to light publicly like he did. I understand it would have come to light somewhat with kids and teacher interviews, but nothing like it is now. That dude and his family are going to probably start getting death threats now, heaven forbid what his kids are gonna have to go through, or possibly grand kids.
The Sheriff has made several second hand statements and even admitted that, for instance making a comment that he heard someone else say but doesn't know if that's true or not. What a horrible job at leadership at the Sheriff's office there. You go back and look at Dallas police chief after an awful disaster, and other law enforcement agency heads during things like this, this guy, the Sheriff, is a freaking joke.
I agree with this.. When something happens, everyone is looking for all the information they can find. I understand there is information people have the right to know, but there is just some information that is best kept "in house".

i am not going to pass judgement on this man. I have no clue what his intentions were. He had no idea if one shooter or 4. He may have very well been at one part of the school guarding kids there. If he ran and hid behind the bushes thats another story, but i have no clue what happened and am not about to pass judgement on a man in this situation.
I agree.
It was a big arse school too. What if he couldn't tell where the shots were? What if he didn't hear any? What if he thought there could be several shooters? What if he thought it was a drill? What if he thought the shooter was about to walk out of a door and he was getting in position?
This didn't last for an hour, it was over very quickly.
I am not defending him, but I am also not throwing blame before we know the whole story. This whole country needs to slow down and wait for facts instead of living in this world of instant gratification and guilt.

Unarmed coach laying across students absorbing countless bullets with his body as a shield vs armed trained resource officer hiding outside.
That's all I have to say.
That's all I have to say.

Wrong. Dead wrong.
These guys WORK FOR US!!!
We have a right to know what the hell happened. How else can we hold them accountable
The problem is too many of you cops think you are unaccountable to anyone and don't want any information but that which you control getting out. Period.
You forget that YOU are OUR servants and work for US.
