May have already been covered in here, but representatives also pay the salaries of their staff. Not uncommon to have 10+ staffers. This $ is presumably to pay them as well, in addition to their travel back and forth to D.C. Not defending the bill, just pointing this out.

Can they not use the forgivable loan for this if they keep their staff?

So a family of 4 will get $3,400, while their Representative gets $57,471.

Who should be used to refer to the subject of a sentence.

25 million for the Kennedy Center was the right move. Coronavirus hates opera music.

to me the problem with the checks is that it really doesnt accomplish much.

people who lose their job or get put on furlough will not have new jobs to find right now, and this check will not help them through these times.

in my opinion, there needed to be an unprecedented freezing of mortgages or something of that nature for about 2-3 months. i have no idea how that would work, and personal checks is better than absolutely nothing, but it seems to be the wrong approach, fundamentally, for something this unprecedented.

You do realize that every major lender is offering this to those affected by COVID except Bank of America? They’re doing it month by month.

I still think this could have been handled very easily with two far more affordable approaches- a 90 day revolving debt holiday and a temporary expansion of existing programs -mainly unemployment and food stamps. Just kick everything down the road 90 days credit wise ( mortgages rent car payments) and allow people to request and acquire the assistance they actually need.

These checks aren't for citizen relief, they're for economic stimulus. We need people spending money on goods and services, increase bank liquidity to open up credit, etc. While a debt holiday would be extremely effective for those impacted by lockdowns, economically it just contributes to further freezing up the gears of the economy...less movement of money.

so in 2-3 months everyone has double or triple mortgage payments. that will end well

That's where the unemployment benefits come in. Low wage earners will get a pay raise for 4 months. Those making over $800-900 per week will lose some, depending on their state.

We'll see if businesses are able to bounce back by the end of summer.
