Steak and Shake has absolutely no room to talk. They abandoned their whole business model far more than CB ever did.

I’m starting to think Steak ‘n Shake built their locations based off of Cracker Barrel locations.

The only thing slower than Steak n Shake's response to the Cracker Barrel news story that cycled out weeks ago is their ticket times to its tables for a patty melt and shoestring fries.

Its a personal Grudge match.

Steak and Shakes owner Sardar Bilgari owns 4+% of Cracker Barrel stock. Hes been fueding with them for years, forcing proxy votes to get his nominees on the Cracker Barrel board.

So basically this is him using the visibility of the steak and shake brand (because who the hell would know who Sardar Bilgari is) to continue to bash cracker barrel leadership as he pushes for more board control.

I actually have some info on this. Some Persian guy who is from Texas was a huge stockholder of cracker barrel. He was supposedly the only guy trying to tell them not to change the shite, and people like it as is. Yall know how that went.
An Iranian FFS!
Anyways I think he sold his stock and he is also a big stockholder for Steak ‘n Shake. So he is taking this personal I guess.
He is definitely the smart guy in this situation though. Cracker barrels other stockholders should have listened.

What was the old business model and how did it change?
I have never even seen a Steak ‘n Shake before.

Old school Steak and Shake was make to order, table service, sit down as much as it was drive-thru. IMO they also had better quality food. They were also 24/7 and fully staffed.

They’re now self-serve kiosks with reduced staff. They’re pushing hard a transition to beef tallow and allowing bitcoin purchases but everything else at the ones here locally have dropped off.

They had a 1940’s-50’s type diner atmosphere and decor with great table service AND a counter:

COVID forced shutdowns in most locations, and they got in financial trouble as a result. So now they've gone to an absolute minimalist, modernist look that replaces table service with kiosks and automated cooking, and practically no service at all. The whole comfortable diner experience is gone. They’ve heavily cut their menu too. Oh, and credit only. No cash, to further reduce manning needs. They're at not even a quarter of the locations they used to have, and its a mechanized quick in, quick out model. Fewer tables to discourage eating there… cheaper to keep clean that way.

S&S used to be a place you’d take your family to before going to movies, shopping, outings, all thats gone. They gutted their whole identity WAY more than Cracker Barrel ever tried to.

CB may go broke with as much as they must be spending on advertising.

Don’t remember seeing ads for them before and now they are everywhere.
