Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) signed a bill Tuesday ordering that a statue of a Confederate general at the U.S. Capitol be removed and replaced with one of an African-American woman.

The statue of Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith will be removed from Statuary Hall and replaced with a monument to Mary McLeod Bethune, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Bethune founded the institution that would go on to become Bethune-Cookman University, a historically black university in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The statue will also be the first monument of an African-American woman in Statuary Hall, according to the AP.

Florida is desperately trying to get their brand redone since they are considered one of the "crazy" places in the states.

I feel like a statue of Corrine Brown would be much more representative of Florida.

You know, they could have left the general up and just stuck the woman up too.

No reason to destroy history

Looking at the statues, other Confederates who are still there include:

Joseph Wheeler - Alabama
Alexander Stephens - Georgia
Jefferson Davis - Mississippi
James Z. George - Mississippi
Zebulon Vance - North Carolina
Wade Hampton - South Carolina
Robert E Lee - Virginia

At least they have a plan in place instead of the usual shitshow we get.. they also had the audacity to go through legislation, what a novel idea.

I mean I don't agree with the legislation but at least they didn't go all trash bag like Mitch. There was a democratic process involved unlike in NOLA

In 50 years, statues of white men will be collector's items. I'm going to start buying now.

So does each state get to choose a statue in the Capitol ? Because I feel like Alabama will start petitioning for having a Nick Saban statue there pretty soon.

I'm fine with it because of the process, as others have said.

Once again, this began with Nikki Haley and the Confederate Flag. Let's all give a big frick you to the chameleon whose flip-flop served as precedent for others to follow, which has resulted in politically correct America giving the Taliban and ISIS a run for its money in destroying historical monuments and statues.

That flag had no business flying on the grounds of the State House.

If folks want to play this silly statue game then remove all and replace with water features or landscape rocks, or something neutral.

Every African American member of the General Assembly agreed to put it there in 2000. And given the flag was right next to the monument honoring the South Carolinians who died defending their state, how is their anything wrong with it? Where does it end? You want to tear down every statue of a pre-Civil Rights white man on the statehouse grounds? Rename streets and buildings at USC? That's the road we're headed down because of white-guilt liberals.
