LINK

This study by the census bereau attempts to link high opioid prescription rates with the rates of people over 30 who are raising their own grandchildren. As if having grandchildren at the age of 30 isn’t a strong indicator of a problem. I’m guessing the parents have either died or are out of the picture.
The states with the highest rates of both are Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
The states with the lowest rates of both are Maine, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, California and New York.

As opposed to people under 30 raising their own grandchildren?

I would bet that LA had more grandparents raising grandkids absent the opioid crisis.

My parents are 64 and 65 and raising one of their grandkids. Has nothing to do with opioid abuse. They also became grandparents in their early 50s, not in their 30s, but according to the data points they would be lumped in to this group. Seems like a bit of a stretch.

My grandparents didn't raise me, but if they did, they would have been over 30.

Aren’t opioid deaths like 5 out of every 47 people are black?

You could have just left the opioid crisis part out.

Not really surprised at the highs or most of the lows.

New York and Cali being on the low side shocked me a bit.

With regards to grandparents raising the kids, there are a few possibilities.

1. Parents died
2. Parents incarcerated
3. Parents are huge frickups who lost parental rights.
4. Parents have the rights but granny is raising the kid because the parent isn’t responsible enough to do it

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, a lot of these numbers are heavily influenced by race simply because certain races have insane percentages of children born out of wedlock, which means anything happening to babymomma likely means granny has to take over.

Have no clue and not sure what this has to do with anything. I do know, in Louisiana, black folks cover 13% of the population but are responsible for 86% of the crime. Which means most of the kids parents are locked up therefore their grandparents are raising them.

Dead parents means that kids go to grandparents or foster care.

That was the whole point of the study. The four places with the highest number of prescription rates are the four places with the highest percentage of grandparents raising children. (I should’ve left out the over 30 nugget it just seemed like an odd variable)
I’m not sure these two independent facts correlate the way they are suggesting.
It obviously doesn’t prove causality, but the underlying message does leave a person with that conclusion.

That 13% is nationally. In Louisiana black people are around 30-35% of the population

I would assume most of that 86% are males though
