West Texas is very cheap and is a desolate shithole unless you want a ranch in the middle of nowhere.

BR is nuts. A 1br apartment in a decent part of town is around $1000/month. For $1300/month, I could get a 1br apartment 2 blocks from the beach in San Diego, CA.
BR’s real estate market is nuts, too, but looks sane compared to New Orleans.

That's Dallas too. I paid $1600 for a luxury 2/2 place in McKinney and now $2300 for a 2/2.5 townhouse in Dallas.

You could live in Scottsdale and not deal with crime and send your kids to public school for those prices. And live in one of the most desirable areas in PHX metro.
And before anyone says the cost of living....AZ is ranked #23, LA is #19. Cost of living here isn't really much higher than LA. When you factor in higher wages for most professions here, decent public school systems so no need to shell out tuition for your kids, lower state taxes, much lower insurance (home and auto)....your overall costs are likely the same or even lower.

States get their money one way or the other. States without income tax typically have high property tax and high sales/gas/auto registration/etc.

This isn't accurate at the majority of public schools in LA. EBR and NO I get you have to send your kid to private school. There are some pretty good schools in much of LA regardless of what people say. The average ACT score in LA was a 19.5. That is requiring ALL students to take the ACT their Jr. year of HS. even the special ed students

Housing is more expensive in GNO and BR metro areas too. Then add in flood, home and auto insurance for the final kick to the groin.

Nursing pay out west in general is pretty good. Get a few years experience and you can easily make 75-80k a year on up(even more if you love overtime). California pays the best(but of course they have a higher COL along the coastal areas). I think TX pays their nurses very well also.
Once you get some experience as a nurse...look for companies that will pay huge bonuses to work there. These companies help find nurses for hospitals. The hospital I work at...I got the job there with a 20K bonus once I have been there a year(I've now been there 10 years). I quit being a travelnurse to take that job in 2007 to set down roots in the PHX area. I STILL get offers from this company (and a few others) to relocate to various parts of the country for bonuses ranging from 20-40K with additional relocation costs paid for. The states for these have varied over the years(Nevada, Texas, California, the midwest...basically all over...except I've never gotten one for Southern states).
Just something to consider in the future

Cool. Great resources As I’ve said many times on this board, I’m out of LA as soon as I get a little bit of RN experience. About a year, maybe 2 in the ER and I figure I can be marketable among travel nursing agencies.
Gonna do that for a couple years and then look to settle down somewhere. I’ve read that Nevada is pretty good in an article somewhere. I think it has something to do with no one wanting to go there, but I think their RNs are paid very well. Anyway, we like Michigan, Upstate NY, or somewhere out west.

They are always ER assignments. Your best bet on finding the better paying assignments is having either ER or ICU experience.

While it may be less than the national average, there isn't many states that have 100% of students taking the ACT. Many of those not testing would be your underachievers, special ed, etc. All students in LA take the test which would skew the numbers.

That's true, we have pretty good public schools in Lafayette and if your kids gets into the gifted program they are set. Mine go to private by choice, not necessity
