Texas property taxes are very very high.
It depends where you live in a state also. Do you own or rent? Quite a few factors in cost of living.

Incorrect. I live near Arlington and TAD has my house valued at $255k and I pay around $6k. We have no income taxes and are in a good ISD for our kids. I miss my friends, LSU football, and food in LA, but not much else.

You’re probably coming out much further ahead. Louisiana sales tax+Income tax+the cost of putting your kid in a private school (which is a necessity if you don’t want them stabbed) would cost a hell of a lot more than 6k.
It’s amazing that Texas is right next door and we are worlds apart in terms of having shite together.

You don’t think the other major cities in each state skew the COL as well? I’m sure Dallas, Houston, and Austin skew Texas’ overall COL a lot more than NO does Louisiana’s.

Especially in the Nola area.
A few factors go into that:
1) NOLA is landlocked. Even if there were no wetlands regulations, the cost of draining the swamps west of Kennet would be prohibitive. In Atlanta and Houston the city can just keep expanding.
2) Out of town celebrities and trust fund hipsters are buying up a lot of property. That's outside !obey coming in that isn't tied to productivity.
3) Too many Section 8 types. The government picks up most of the rent, making prices much higher than they would be if landlords were limited to charging what people can afford of they had to pay their own way.

You can live in the burbs and send your kids to a decent public school which is what most people that move to Texas do anyway. I wouldn't put my kids in an inner city Houston public school. The job market/business climates aren't comparable though.

Baton Rouge is pretty expensive, relative to what it offers. Factor in lake Charles' jacked up housing market as well.
