A friend was a trooper starting in the 90s. At first they had to wear the Smokey hat any time they got out of the car, but the rule was relaxed later in his time there. Not sure what they do now, but I seldom see a trooper outside a car any more.

I was at Madi Vras 20 years ago on Bourbon. A LSP trooper was walking past me and a drunk college aged kid knocked off his hat as a joke. Trooper grabbed kid by the throat and walked him to the wall. Pretty sure kids feet were barley touching the ground with Trooper yelling are you fricking stupid. Kid yelled out YES.
His buddies were laughing pretty hard but kid learned a lesson a bout poking a bear.
