State prison nurse accused of sex with inmate

BATON ROUGE — Another Louisiana Department of Corrections employee has been accused of having sex with a male prisoner.
In a press release, the corrections department said a nurse admitted to having sex multiple times "over the past few months" with an inmate at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, the second largest prison in the state.
Laurie Ballard, 44, of Independence, was booked with sexual battery and malfeasance in office.
Officials said when she was confronted Ballard also said she had been emailing the inmate under an alias.
Ballard is on administrative leave pending disciplinary action. She has been employed at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center since Oct. 13, 2007.
Officials said Ballard met or exceeded all department requirements to be hired, including a criminal background check.
Earlier this spring an employee shakedown at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola also revealed that some women guards were having sex with male inmates, leading to firings and arrests.
Officials said the department will turn over the latest incident to the district attorney for prosecution.
