Depending on the University, that may only be a small component of their actual job.

Based on their level of education, expertise, and demand of their field I think the $70-80k range is fair for starting salary.

So the Starbucks gal probably makes more per year than an elementary teacher (i'm guessing, didn't look it up).

And you're wrong.

It's overly simplistic to say, "This person brings in more money so they make more money."

An NFL player has a unique skill set and training. Their ability relative to a replacement is what drives their worth, in addition to the revenue generated by their company.

A school district's budget is dependent upon the tax base. School districts with higher tax bases tend to pay more money to their teachers. That has nothing to do with the employee's worth to the organization.

Do I get to hold them accountable at that price? No tenure?

Much of that is based on the funding level of the school or district. Better funded schools often have special programs for kids with learning disabilities.

What starting professor positions do you know of that come with tenure?

Actually no, it's still supply/demand. How much it would cost to get a qualified person to replace you

The education system is supposed to be an investment in our country. A good education system creates better employees and entrepreneurs that increase productivity and taxable revenue.

did you miss the word "direct" in my post?

The Starbucks girl pours me a cup of coffee and hands it to me. I have to pay Starbucks directly for that service.

A bus picks my kids up every morning and brings them to school. They receive an education (allegedly), then a bus brings them home at the end of the day.
I hand over exactly $0.00 directly to the bus driver or school for these services.

Do you believe that tenure means a professor can't be fired? Because it doesn't.

So, the price will go down when they get tenure? Sort of a tradeoff for job security.

I believe it removes a lot of ability of the employer to hire and fire at will.

Why would a guy with a PhD in electrical engineering EVER be a college prof for 40k a year? You have to pay them what the field dictates, otherwise they will just work somewhere else.

When I was a professor I made 81K/year.

And that's a bad thing? All it does is require that a firing be justified for cause.

PHDS are often underemployed. Most positions that require one as an entry level job are saturated with applicants
