Once again, fricking the middle class. Someone making 125k a year with 300k in assets cannot afford 50k a year for college. It's their money so they can do what they want with it but America likes to hold the middle class down.
You are not going to pay $50K a year with a income of 125K, once your income and assets exceed the level for zero cost it goes to a sliding scale based on the household income and assets. At Harvard a family of 4 with a $150K household income would probably pay around 10% of the total cost, above that the percentage increases. Less than 30%percent of the students at Harvard pay full cost, Stanford probably has similar numbers, that ivy league schools are only for the wealthy is long standing myth.

Harvard is the second-wealthiest non-profit organization in the world. Second only to the Catholic Church. They certainly would rather have the best applicants in the world coming there at a discount than getting someone to pay full tuition.
Money is not really a concern to Harvard.

Easy enough to get a sham divorce and fake lower assets

Nice program. I know Yale does the same and many Ivy Leagues have something similar. Poor will get in free. Upper class has the assets and cash flow. But, it kills the middle to upper middle class. They end up with paying a large majority of the cost through debt. $60k x 4 is a lot. The vast majority of the middle class will pass on the opportunity to attend. What you get is a student body of upper income and dirt poor. Socialist dream.
Yep
I went with my freshman son to a presentation Stanford Harvard penn Georgetown duke were putting on and that is the basics
If you are poor you aren't paying shite but for everyone else the 75k per year in tuition and expenses is a bit much to swallow
I wonder if that student body composition is really a good idea long term- ( just the uber rich and the poor with no middle or upper middle class)

I remember reading a piece on the isolation of the "poors"
They can't hang out with the typical rich kids because of the social class difference and they can't really hang out with who they used to because there is a social gap there as well.

$126k people are effed. That ain't upper class. Imagine paying 46k per year out of $126l salary.

Stanford uses a sliding scale so someone making 126k does not have to pay full tuition. There's still financial aid available for middle and upper class on top of the free tuition.

Still gotta get in though.
That's what you can do when you have a really big endowment, and tons of really talented alums.

125k ain't that much for two working parents, especially living in Cali. They shuold have a sliding scale.
Posted on 3/5/17 at 2:42 pm to Street Hawk
Since they have so much excess money, I don't see why they should continue to receive taxpayer dollars.

That's probably about 75% of the kids in Louisiana who qualify from a financial perspective. Who needs TOPS?

Yeah they did this like 2-3 years ago

Do you think there's a sharp cutoff? less than 125,000 free, 125,001 pays full msrp?
That's not actually the way it works, but keep on hating if it makes you happy.

I'm not hating. My income and net worth would probably not qualify for shite but the way America fricks the middle class is not right. We encourage sitting on your front porch to collect a check and other benefits.

Stop living outside your means and you could afford to send you kids to Stanford.

I haven't read this thread but I would bet big money that the vast vast vast majority of Stanford students come from families who make over $125k a year.
