St. Tammany sheriff deputies illegally arrested a federal agent - Nanette Krentel related

A federal appeals court has affirmed a lower court’s ruling against the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office in a case stemming from the arrest of federal agent Jerry Rogers, who criticized the Sheriff’s Office in private emails over the handling of the investigation into the high-profile, still-unsolved murder of Nanette Krentel.
Rogers sued the Sheriff's Office in 2020, claiming his arrest was illegal. The suit named Sheriff Randy Smith and two of his deputies, Danny Culpeper and Keith Canizaro.
quote:
U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo had previously ruled that Rogers’s arrest was unconstitutional, finding in Rogers’s favor in his case against the two deputies. She didn’t rule on the case against Smith, which she said would be better suited to trial before a jury.
Smith appealed that ruling to U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The court heard oral arguments in the case the morning of Aug. 9 and affirmed the lower court’s ruling before close of business on the very same day — an unusually short turnaround time for the court.
quote:
The case revolves around the 2017 murder of Krentel, who was shot in the head. Deputies found her charred remains in the burnt ruins of her house in the Lacombe area. No arrests have been made in the case.
quote:
Appeals Court Judge Edith Brown Clement also asked the attorney for the Sheriff’s Office whether the murder had been solved. When she was told that no arrest was made, she responded, “Well, that seems relatively incompetent.”
“All the criticism of the office started the action against Mr. Rogers,” she said. “So I'm just curious if he was right.”

Damn
ETA: not a lawyer, but isn't truth considered a defense to defamation claims?

I've only seen that out of the Fifth Circuit one time. That is not "unusually short," it is extremely rare.

This doesn’t sound like something the st Tammany sheriff’s office would do!

What is funny is that the same imbiciles who pushed that drunk wife beating buffoon Randy Smith into office 8 years ago (CCST and their ilk), are now pearl clutching and calling him corrupt.
Its a real tragedy that Tim Lentz didn't win that election.

The details there are insane. The DAs office flat told them it was unconstitutional and they went forward anyway but made sure not to tell the judge that signed the arrest warrant what the DAs position was. Gotdamn idiots.
And Jerry is a damn good guy.

8 Years ago it was Smith vs. Strain, so the choice was obvious and many people didn't know a lot about Smith. And Strain needed to GTFO for damn sure.
Lentz ran in 2019. That election was pretty twisted. I liked Tim, but there were concerns because he was top brass under Strain for many years (he had left for a while and then came back as Covington Police Chief), so that may have skewed it for a lot of people.

Mixed bag. They've done some great things and some crazy or dumb things, and pat themselves on the back a lot, but also put in a lot of real work and faced pretty real threats.

Correct, I meant the 2019 election for Lentz. The reason it was skewed for people is because the same people who touted that Lentz worked for Strain conveniently left out the fact that Randy did as well before he left to go to Slidell PD. What is indisputable is that Lentz was infinitely more qualified to run that organization and the Parish has suffered greatly due to the outcome of that election.

I think its more that they have mostly pushed personal agendas and any greater public benefits have been a matter of coincidence. Its not that they are anti-corruption, they just want to push certain candidates they think they can influence. For example, one of them is running (again?) for a parish council seat. He is a former pharmacist who lost his license for dealing pills.

There was a long thread on here about that. If I remember the OP on that said that the husband murdered her and the cops covered it up. Looks like they got away with it.

Does anyone know where her husband is now?

At one point I read that he bought a house in Mandeville and lives there now.

It is not as rare as you think.

Wait a minute - does this Jerry also have a baseball playing son between the ages of say, 15 and 25?
If so, yes, damn good guy.

Agree, indisputable.

As a lifelong St. Tammany resident it is just sickening to me that the same cast of characters continue to frick up our parish. Why does everything have to be so corrupt and incompetent?

I don't know, but St. Tammany has enough corruption for a parish twice its size. I think trust the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans more than I trust the St. Tammany Parish Council and executive branch. St. Tammany is where slippery and slimy meet.

That will leave a mark

Unfortunately, i'm sure he'll get re-elected even though he is probably one of the dumbest individuals in politics i've ever come across. He swore he would only serve 2 terms. He's now running for the 3rd term. I'm pretty sure the guy running against him doesn't have enough clout or support to give him a run for his money.
