People who don't have children still have to pay the higher taxes. And more households don't have school age children than ones who do.
And those people will get to either live near uneducated pieces of trash, or better people will move to that area for the better schools. The only buffer you can put between yourself and ghetto trash is money. And with vouchers, sometimes that doesn't even work.

I'm voting for it. Im also moving back to Ascension parish. :)

My parents are retired and live in BTR and I know they get some sort of reduced property tax rate bc of their age.
Here is what I found on the EBR Assessor's website on that subject:
quote:LINK
Special Assessment Level
The Special Assessment Level allows someone who meets certain requirements to have the assessed value of the property frozen. Those who qualify for the special assessment level should be aware that this does not automatically freeze the amount of their tax bill. Only the assessed value will be frozen.
The amount of taxes due could change due to an increase in a millage rate in your area or if the size of living area is increased.
Requirements:
1) One of the owners must be 65 years of age or older as of January 1 of the qualifying year.
2) Owner or owners must have a total combined adjusted gross income of less than $70,484.11.
3) Applicants must own, occupy, and receive a homestead exemption on the property.
There are also special circumstances that would allow a surviving spouse who is 55 years of age or older or who has minor children to receive the special assessment level if the deceased spouse had previously qualified for it. If you are a surviving spouse, please call the East Baton Rouge Parish Assessor's Office to see if you qualify.
Also, a person who is 100% disabled and considered permanently disabled, or who has a 50% military service connected disability may qualify if they meet the same income requirement above.

It sucke that they taxed homeowners which more than likely have transportation so that the people that don't didn't have to pay a higher fare. So now I pay my transportation cost AND they're so NBR users don't have to pay an extra buck for a ride. This is a perfect example of the attitude of politicians and the direction of the country.
I liked Kip and voted for him, and his silly downtown tax. His position FOR Cats vote and AGAINST St George vote has changed my mind. Big time hypocrisy

I like Kip, too. I really do. I think he's a very active, hands-on mayor and I think he's done a lot of good. However, I'm not with him on this one.

There won't be a vote on this in 2014.

The article states that it won't be until Spring of 2015.

Right. It will be in the early Spring.

Great. So my house is possibly "worth more" if I decide to sell it at some point in the future . In the meantime, EVERY SINGLE YEAR until then, I get new taxes to pay for all the new infrastructure, new projects and crap that St. George will undoubtedly discover we need.
Sounds legit.

But will St. George do the same thing?
Who says the city of Baton Rouge is doing it now? I'm not sure if this reduced rate is at the city or parish level.

But now I realize I'll be paying for private schools regardless
Exactly. If they think it through, there is no way in hell the majority of the catholic school families pull their kids and place them in the "new" public school. And those are the people that St George needs to vote with them.
Another problem I haven't seen addressed: Right now there is some "rule" that states the BR School system has to provide buses or pay a certain amount towards the private schools for transportation. Does that go away in a new city? If so, then the Anti St George folks need to publicize that. There are a LOT of students on those buses to the private schools. And that service would never be funded by the schools/diocese.

The same people who will ensure that property taxes won't increase.

That is the FIRST half of the equation. The second politically-incorrect part of the equation is REVERSE FLIGHT into St George from Baton Rouge. Blaine and Margaret thought they were sticking it to Kip. Blaine and Margaret are gonna get an unexpected surprise at their neighbors open house, because The Jeffersons are moving on up.

I'm honestly uninformed about the process.
I know when the school board has a tax election, either for new or renewed millages, the school board has to allocate taxpayer funds to pay the costs of holding the election, including the placement and removal of voting machines, paying for the precinct workers and any rent for buildings housing the precinct.

Out of all the legit arguments against St. George, this is the one type of BS comment I see the most, and yet the St. George supporters are the ones that are called racists. Fun how that works. I live in Shenandoah and my neighbors house is currently for sale. If the Jeffersons can afford to buy next to me, then they are contributing members of society and my wife and i will be the first to welcome to the neighborhood. If they move because of St
George it will be to do what is best for their family's future, which I would greatly respect. Hell the first beer and BBQ is on me

Disclaimer: I am still undecided about which way I will vote if/when it comesto an election. I'd like to hear more advantages/disadvantages from both sides rather than personal attacks. But statements like the one quoted above and generalizations of those that live in the area piss me off more than anything. Here's looking at you, Delgado.

A nola.com article this afternoon says SG only needs 16,500 signatures to equal 25% of the registered voters in SG.
LINK
Is it possible the annexed areas have almost 4,000 registered voters living in them and that's what made the number of registered voters in SG decrease? That doesn't sound possible.

Since the campaign to incorporate the city of St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish began last fall, the number of signatures organizers needed to get the issue on a ballot was said to be somewhere around 18,000.
On Monday, though, East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Elaine Lamb said her office had run a new report, and found the number of signatures needed is actually 16,500.
The registrar's office counts about 65,998 registered voters in the area proposed for St. George, Lamb told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune on Monday. Municipal incorporations require supporters to get signatures from one-fourth of the registered voters in the area, which in this case would be 16,500.

George and Weezy are not moving into my neighborhood. You are ignoring a huge factor, people would be running from the area to create a market. There is no way that North Baton Rouge is moving into Oak Hills.
