St. George organizers have the required amount of signatures

St. George supporters celebrated a major victory Sunday evening when they announced that enough signatures have been collected to put the proposal to create their own city in the southern part of the parish to a vote of the people.
“Everyone who said we’d never get the required number of signatures to put this on a ballot was wrong,” Lionel Rainey, a St. George spokesman, said Sunday shortly after the announcement was made. “We just climbed a hill that virtually everyone said was unclimbable.”
However, Rainey also was cautious.
“The fight is nowhere near over,” he said.
Petitions as of Sunday had 17,750 signatures, he said. The group was informed last week by the East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters that it needed exactly 17,746 signatures from residents within the proposed area.
“We could turn it in today if we wanted to,” Rainey said.
But that’s not what they’re planning to do. To be safe, Rainey said, the group will refrain from submitting the petition for validation until supporters can collect about 1,750 more signatures, which is 10 percent more than required.

This of course doesn't mean that it's official that the city is going to happen, just that they have enough signatures to put the issue on the December ballot with the Senate and Congressional run-offs. Expect a retaliation and of course an attempt to change the election rules by EBR Parish in the next few days.

No one ever shows up to vote. It's so pathetic. How will this affect the st George vote? Older and regular voters will vote it down? Or vote yes to st g?

It's gonna happen this time.
I can feel it.
I can feel it.

To St George!!!

Good, maybe they can finally shut up and stop their constant bitching and moaning.

It's not gonna count as the annexation boundaries have changed.

St George should just organize a military strike against Baton Rouge. St George will never be what they want it to become. Way too many old voters in Baton Rouge to ever let it happen, even if they had the signatures.

Wasn't most, if not all the land annexed, commercial property? If there were any residences, I think that would be a negligible number, right?

I still can't understand why they didn't do this last year. all they had to do is set up a table somewhere on campus and a lot of people would have signed up right then.

Doesn't matter. The Petition is based on boundary lines that no longer exist.
Courts will over turn it.

If there was 107,000 residents of the proposed area and they had to scrap together 17,000 at the last seconds, I really really doubt a vote would help it.
I truly think the against it vote would greatly out weigh the vote for

Let the mass annexations begin. They'll be left with nothing but high property taxes. Yet still over half the kids will still go to private schools. Just dumb!!!

Smart annexation by the City/Parish Government! Being sarcastic! The properties being annexed have minimal residents but plenty dirt and grass and no property tax revenues.

Umm no, I want the St. Georgians to get what they've been clamoring for.
