I can’t believe St. George athletics dominated so much they decided to name a city after them.

More reason why you see few people giving a shite that The Advocate is paywalling their material.

It wasn’t worth what we paid before.

Does everyone here think st George will legit happen now? I don’t know how the process works but even though this is a win, is it still very realistic?

I think the smartest thing they could do is try and have a peace conference and help them form an ISD and everything else remain the same. It would show that the City leadership including the media recognize the failures of the past. Many would say it is too late for that.

This what I'm talking about. NBR wants economic development. StG wants autonomy in their schools. If the sides were to engage, I think progress can be made toward each others' goals.

I also think that the frustrated and disenfranchised in StG will be disappointed in what happens after the split -- and I'm not just talking about taxes.

I have been monitoring the situation from afar (Orleans Parish) and watched most of the committee hearing yesterday and here are my questions/thoughts:
*If the plan is modeled on what Central did, why wouldn't it have at least the same success? One would have to think it has the potential to exceed Central's success because it is a more affluent area.
*Why didn't the city of BR annex this area and others into the the city? My guess is that they would have had to extend city services to those areas.
*I heard some at the committee meeting claiming that tax payer money from other areas helped make the SG area the nice area it currently is. Does anyone believe this? Is there any data that would show that SG received a disproportionate share of tax revenue?

The old “You didn’t build that” logic.

Classic.

NBR can’t get economic development in part because the area is a demilitarized zone and because the people living there aren’t capable of filling the kinds of jobs that would show up.

Best case scenario for them, IMHO, is that more plants open up which employ people other than NBR residents but that have a downstream effect creating jobs transporting materials to-from those plants as well as providing services such as restaurants which cater to those individuals.

If they want more economic development than that, it will take a complete and total retraining of the population between education and culture. Which absolutely won’t happen.

NBR gets a lionshare of "economic development" (aka, wealth redistribution) and their political factions shite a brick at the StG ISD

Also the people in charge of NBR seem to have more power from the struggle and not by having success. They can get more money from crying victim than from working on development.

If City of BR and NBR were smart they would reengage. But, they are not smart. Judging from the Committee meeting video I watched they are dumber than I ever imagined.

I live in the proposed St. George and signed the petition because I believe in democracy in action. Let the people vote.

I am still undecided. Very sympathetic to the STG movement. My main concern is St. George movement leaders not being completely transparent about tax hikes for the area.

There is no saving the current set up IMO. You can just slow the decline at best.

From the way mayor SWB looked at the meeting yesterday, it seemed like she would rather spite StG and in the process destroy BR than find a way for the two cities to work together.

I don’t mind if my taxes go up if the money stays in my community. The problem is they always use the middle class money to fix up the shitty areas of town. In five years they’re shitty again because there is no pride in those areas.

As a resident of the Great City of St George, that's exactly how I feel as well.

I understand and can handle a tax increase...especially if $ is better spent. My concern is a significant tax increase.

Hearing about Central not even having property taxes has my mind a little blown to be honest. Is that true?

As soon as I can see some real numbers I can trust I would be on board with STG.

Central has property taxes. City government runs off sales tax but Central still pays property taxes to the parish and city millages for the school district and I believe for fire services as well.
