I think that would quickly lower the allure of theft in this country. Many businesses just let these guys go because the penalties are so low it's not worth it.

I'm not an arab barbarian and this isn't how western civilizations have dealt with non-violent crime in 500 years.

So no.

That kind of punishment was acceptable when there were no police, courts, or prisons. We've evolved way past that point.

IMO the better legal reform would be to totally eliminate Plea Bargaining. Would solve the problem of lifetime criminals walking the streets on reduced sentences and stop a bunch of railroading of innocents and petty crimes since the courts would initially be vastly overwhelmed by cases.

Meh, technology with prosthetics is getting so advanced that soon enough they can a better hand anyway. One that probably has some inspector gadget shite with lasers and and a lock pick in the fingers and then we'll just be creating super criminals/ thieves. So no, do not support the creation of super cyborg criminals.

Of the head? Yes

Any other appendage just makes them a larger burden on society

Courts need major reforming in many areas, such as torts. Won't ever happen unless something major changes.

I don't know.

Or it would mean the dockets would stack up to the point that more and more crimes would be considered "petty" or the cost would virtually bankrupt the system.

If there were some way to take politics out of the prosecutors office, I think that would allow for more prosecutorial discretion. That may free up the court system enough to allow for adequate resources for more prosecutions when needed and less plea bargaininng on many cases.

How bout if we go back to the old prison colonies like French Guyena? Those penal colonies were hardcore and no one ever escaped.

Because this isn't the middle ages? We have resources and infrastructure in place to deal with petty crime unlike in the dark ages when they had the plague and death-by-diarrhea to constantly worry about and couldn't afford to deal with shitheads who steal by putting them in a fancy prison.

Use your fricking head for once.
