Ruston is a beautiful town and the last time I checked, had the lowest unemployment rate in the state, and right near the top in educational level and per capita income. But it's pretty isolated and hard to get to, and while Tech is a really nice school, it's not a household name nationally like UGA or Ole Miss.

Kinda. I mean, I-20 goes through it. When I think of isolated or hard to get to, usually it’s cities without interstate access. Natchez is a good example.

LA should have kept the cow college in Pineville, put LA Tech in BR for engineering, and the Univ of LA in Natch as liberal arts. Better for the state, but worse for LSU football, and that's what matters.

True but flying there from anywhere entails at least one plane change followed by a 30-60 minute drive. Tech's QB lights it up on Saturday, ESPN won't be popping in Monday to do a quick feature.
Ruston does have a few things going for it. Hunt-Guillot is a worldwide engineering/construction outfit, and of course there's James Davison.

As manufacturing dries up and middle class jobs disappear and those folks with them cities are left with two classes of people, those well enough off it does not matter and those too poor and stupid to do anything about it.

Ruston just doesn’t have the money. It does have the potential to be like an Oxford or Athens but there’s just not a lot of money there

30% of the population can’t continue to work and pay taxes to fund the entire state. Combine this low tax base with the likelihood of 50+% of your college-educated deciding to GTFO and you have a problem

Uneducated population so no skilled workforce. Lack of quality free education if industry were to bring in educated workforce.
Little to no opportunities for workers or their families. Uncertain political climate for major industrial investment. The whole lawsuit thing.
Think about it: for a while all Louisiana could get was Fruit of the Loom underwear plants and even that went away after the incentives stopped.
So, although Monroe might be fine to visit or have a crawfish boil, Uber isn’t looking to set an Innovation Center there or anywhere in Louisiana for that matter.
Louisiana can, and needs to get it’s shite together. frick, other places aren’t often better, just less corrupt, more transparent, have better roads and schools.
But they don’t have the ‘charm’ of Louisiana. But ‘charm’ doesn’t bring the businesses.
