Texting Stats

quote:

A staggering 49 percent of adults admit to texting and driving, even though 98 percent of adults say they know the practice is unsafe. Below are 10 statistics that show how dangerous texting and driving really is.

9

Number of Americans killed every day from motor vehicle accidents that involved distracted driving, such as using a cellphone, texting or eating.

1 in 4

The probability that a motor vehicle crash involved a cellphone.

Impaired Driving

quote:

Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes.1

People that text and drive are fricking idiots. I drive defensively and use my horn an average of 7 times a day just to stay alive. Wake up, frickers.

Would you mind giving some relevant stats? How many deaths per day are the result of texting versus DWI?

And how many people text and drive versus DWI?

ETA: Without me having to do the work. It's your post, big boy.

One example from Minnesota LINK

quote:

Minnesota law enforcement agencies cited 550 drivers for texting as part of an enhanced enforcement and education campaign for distracted driving during April 11-20. According to preliminary information from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the 10-day event also included:
•1,394 citations for not wearing seat belts
•25 citations for not using child restraints
•417 actions (378 citations and 39 arrests) taken against driving after revocation, driving after suspension, or driving after cancellation
•15 DWI arrests

“The number of citations made in just those 10 days shows that far too many drivers still make poor choices behind the wheel,” said Donna Berger, OTS director. “Law enforcement officers across the state will continue to enforce distracted driving laws. Drivers can and will be ticketed at any time for texting while driving, not just during an enhanced enforcement campaign.”

So 51% of the adults surveyed are liars. Everyone with a cell phone and car texts and drives or has at least done it once.

The 49% stat is a lie. Probably more along the lines of 95%. I used to until I wrecked into this chick. Now, I only do it when I'm stopped.

Drunk = looking at the road, but impaired
Texting = not looking at the road

It's a huge problem. Pretty much everyday I notice people swerving and they are almost always looking at a phone as they pass by. People are so addicted to their phones its pitiful.

I used to text and drive with(what I thought) was little problem. I've realized how insanely dangerous it is. I don't trust myself to drive safe while texting. That says all you need to know about how I feel about others doing it. Texting and driving is really, REALLY dangerous.

If you're using your horn that much, the problem is most likely you.

I quit texting and driving. I don't even look at the phone in the car anymore.

Personal stats:

Run off the road onto the shoulder by a person looking at their phone - 3 in the last month.

Run off the road onto the shoulder by a drunk driver - 1 in my life.

Please don't mistake this as me saying that drunk driving is acceptable. I just believe that looking at your phone driving is just as, if not more, dangerous. It's a matter of what police are focusing on, IMO.

had to text quite often as a driver

mostly did it at a light,

sometimes had to pull over.

mostly wasn't too long in nature, usually package pickup info...not gossip

as for my pvt life, I'm not attached to the phone
when I rarely get one and I'm on the road, usually the hwy...it's usually in the form of an ETA...so I carefully take my time to respond

in the city , I pull over

I don't ever text while moving. If I'm stopped at a red light and I know I have about 20-30 seconds before I have to move I might. Though usually I just don't text back when in the car. "Sorry I was driving" is a perfectly rational excuse for not replying.

I got my 7th DWI from texting while driving. Cop was pretty cool though and arrested me just for DWI and not for texting while driving.

Texting and driving is more dangerous than a DUI (under certain percentage of alcohol).

3:1 looks like DUI is worse especially when the factors for "texting while driving" include eating and being on the phone

Mythbusters tested this a while back and found that texting is even worse than shitfaced driving.

As another poster said, when someone is drunk, they are at least looking at the road and trying to drive safely.
