I bounced the question off my dad about what can be done about income staying stagnant for a while. He said that wages had remained stagnant but income is a little different than wages. He then got a phone call and I had to run so I didn’t get an answer behind what he meant by that statement. Is there a difference? I don’t see how they could be really any difference.

Wages would typically come from a job.

Income can come from multiple sources (job, rental property, gifts, etc)

All I got

Wages are what you earn. Income is what they pay you.

Getting paid $10 an hour to flip burgers: wage

Capital gains: income

A wage is always income, but not all income is from a wage.

Wages are your salary from one job.

Income includes money you get from outside of one specific job.

If you have 2 jobs, your income will be more than the wages you earn from either job.

I may have chuckled but I’m trying to create a dialogue here.

You could just call your dad later to ask him what he meant...

I’d rather get collectively mocked on the OT.

Think of it like this:

Wage is just a piece of overall compensation. In economic terms, your healthcare benefits, your 401k matching, your company's daycare, your vacation days, etc., etc. are all considered interchangeable with wages. There is an economic cost to the company for all of it.

Total compensation has actually been rising in real terms about as much as productivity growth over the last thirty years, but healthcare (especially) and other benefits have been eating up virtually all the gains. That's, mostly but not entirely, why wages have remained flat.

Overall income includes not just your total compensation from your company but any realized gains in equity you hold, realized gains from real estate, income from Social Security, etc., etc.
