re: Spinoff for those who do not have trucks... How do you get by without one?

I was considering a large SUV as well but the trucks are a good bit cheaper.
I have a folding lid on my truck so I sort of get the best of both worlds. My truck is typically our road trip vehicle even over my wife's explorer. She even says my truck is more comfortable for long rides.

You may be surprised to learn that there are businesses that will loan you a vehicle in exchange for money. Crazy business model, I know, but somehow they make it work.
I've seen this mentioned a few times. Does anyone rent pickup trucks for a few hours? Someone mentioned the big box stores. This may just push me over the fence to the no-truck camp.

I no longer need a truck. Instead I have a Subaru Outback with a trailer hitch. It will tow a fishing boat, an ATV, and it has four wheel drive. It handles ice and snow with no problem, and I can get 30mpg on the highway.
Renting a UHAUL trailer once or twice a year that I need to move something big is way cheaper than a $50,000 Chevy Silverado. It doesn't make sense to me to drive something designed to tow 5 tons across the arctic tundra when I don't need that capacity pretty much ever.
I am intrigued by the new mid sized truck from Chevrolet though. The Colorado looks very good. Probably a more appropriate size for my needs.

Uhaul is $20 for the first 2-3hours. Think their may be a mileage too.
Also, it is amazing the places that deliver now, most for little or no costs.

The colorados are nice.
Only issue is you get 50% of the capability of full size trucks for 85% of the price

I've driven a pickup for so long I think I'd be lost without one. I don't even pay attention to cars unless I happen to notice an exotic or something. If I were forced to buy a car tomorrow I wouldn't know where to even star
Same here. Been driving for 18 years and have only ever had trucks

I read that they tow almost 7,000 lbs.....which is probably way more than what 95% of the posters here needed if they were honest with themselves.
The Colorado (and the Tacoma) actually fit in most garages with plenty of room to spare as well.

how? Are you always doing home Diy "projects?"
Posted on 6/23/15 at 4:07 pm to JoePepitone
Why not both...I've got a semi-low performance car for my daily driver and recently bought a cheap busted 2door Tahoe for bad weather/snow or to go play offroad with. I do agree that a truck/SUV is almost a necessity to get anything substantial accomplished by yourself though.

How big of a boat are you towing?
I've only ever had Yukons, but the next one will be a truck. Between my hunting and fishing gear my vehicle is always smelling like mildew. Also will be towing a boat.

I want the new Tacoma. Could get everything I need done with it.

I am one of those that can't pinch my nose enough to admit that I would like a Subaru. I value economic and high utility objects/tools more than most. But I can't stomach the amount of granola needed to drive a Subaru.

Correct on the towing. The Tacoma can haul 6500 lbs. The redesigned '16 will probably tow at least 7000. For the urban cowboy, which most of us are, that is all we will ever need. $50k on a V8 that gets 12-15 mpgs is a bit excessive.

Same shite with trailers. People will ask you to borrow your trailer 25 times a year, but won't lay down $500 for their own
This is why I sold mine. But, that was back when I was in my 20's and lots of friends didn't have one.

My f150 averaged almost 18mpg with the 5.0 V8. And also didn't cost anywhere near $50k.

No, so subtract 1 mpg
ETA: IMO outside the Tacoma, there is no reason to buy a midsize truck. They offer marginal efficiency gains at a not substantial savings. Doesn't seem worth it.

If you put the back seat down in the mini van sounds like you'll be just fine.

My F-150 Ecoboost averages a little better than 19MPG in a combination of city/highway mileage.
