What's your number one consideration in buying a new car?
Safety
Looks
Brand recognition
Reliability
Cost
Other?
For me, since one it's one of, if not the, most likely ways to die under age 60 is in a car crash- it's Safety first.
That's why I get Volvos for myself and the family and drive a current model XC 90. I'm always surprised by how many people that don't make that their top consideration.

How many new cars in the US are actually unsafe these days?

All makes are much safer than they used to be so it's not that much of a concern. Safety tech has come a long way in the last 5 or so years.

How do they determine vehicle safety nowadays? Do they go by testing or by fatalities? Because a lot of baws die in trucks because they weren't wearing a seat belt.

would you feel safe in a Fiat or similar sized car?

Yes
But safety would have absolutely no bearing on me not driving a Fiat

Owned multiple Volvos last century for about 20 years, safety was the main reason. It pains me that their reputation for safety isn't what it was (or else they don't advertise it like they used to). IMO Volvo went downhill big time once Ford bought them, believe they might be improving with the Chinese ownership (which, if I understand correctly, pretty much lets Volvo Sweden make the big decisions). Bought a new car last summer, made a list of IIHS Top Safety Pick + vehicles (so safety was the number one consideration) and then went with looks, reliability history, and fun factor. Got a Subaru Forester, seems like Subaru is the company advertising safety like Volvo used to.

1. Looks (doesnt have to be gorgeous, just not ugly)
2. Reliability (consumer reports mainly)
3. Safety (agree that majority of newer cars have 4/5 stars and safe, but i go to nhtsa.org and watch videos on how vehicle(s) take collisions)
4. Cost/cost to maintain/mpg
5. Functionality (fits my current and future needs)

I want something that's fast enough to scare the crap out of people, but it also has to be reliable.
