This.

My wife can’t manage money for shite. Awesome at almost everything but that. She could nickel and dime a billionaire into the poor house. Joint checking, joint savings, separate 401ks of course. If she was responsible for part of the bills out of a separate account she would be borrowing money from me every month.

That's why you have separate play money account and everything else somewhat joint that you handle if she is that bad.

My wife and I have had a joint account since before we got married. We were poor together and now we are OT poor together.

I manage the house bills because she has a small business and deals with all that crap.

It’s not even that it’s that bad. We make good money (I make 5X what she does) she will just buy stupid shite sometimes. For example our daughter is moving into a one bedroom apartment this semester. She buys all this cooking shite for her and place settings for 8. Our daughter has the domestic skills of a kangaroo and you can’t even fit 8 people in this apartment.

You need to point her to some minimalist documentaries.

I’m not a miser but I’m not frivolous either. I want to retire at 55. Extra money goes in the savings or up your 401K contribution.

Yours, mine, and ours.

We put a percentage of our checks into an account for shared bills. (Ours)

Everything else we keep for ourselves.

We do have shared savings and credit cards.

Then you can't blame her. You do dumb shite, she does dumb shite. You can't say your dumb shite is just better

Separate your play money that is not needed to help you retire at 55.

Eh. I get your point but almost everything I buy has a purpose. I know I’m biased when it comes to that. I never say shite about clothes, jewelry, etc. it’s the shite that sits in a box forever that drives me crazy

We have a joint checking, 2 separate checking, 1 joint savings, and 2 separate savings. None of it is really secretive or anything though.

I just use a credit card she can’t access for all nefarious activities.

We had separate accounts, but the bills came out of my account, and the groceries came out of hers. I mostly paid for everything else, and she basically did whatever she wanted with the money she earned.

Got that wrong. Was thinking about frugal.

I did get a credit card in my own name so I can buy him gifts and he can't see what I get.

Poor guy still pay for it, though.

We have separate accounts. All the money is deposited to my account and I send him money weekly for him to do what he wants. I pay all bills.

This is good imo. Give him $500-$1000 a month to do whatever dumb shite you want and I'll take care of the rest.

Wife and I are 50+. Married 20+ years.

We have separate checking, savings, and brokerage accounts.

We both work. Situation works great for us.

He loves our set up. We’ve tried a few different ways of paying bills but this one has worked the best and longest.
