But he's a run of the mill liberal with shallow and unremarkable stances on gun rights, capitalism, etc.

Exactly. No one here is going to argue his expertise or brilliance on astrophysics.

But I’ve heard him a lot on other venues, Joe Rogan, CBS, his own show, and he leans left and spouts a lot of lefty stuff.

Doesn’t make him any less of a brilliant astrophysicist, but being a brilliant astrophysicist doesn’t make him infallible either.

Of course, he’s entertaining to listen to or he wouldn’t even be the celebrity that he is.

I really enjoyed the remake of Cosmos.

His writing and communication skills (podcast, tv shows, etc) are the reason we know him, but even without that he would have a stellar career.

Dont get me wrong, the dude is bright. But he's not top of his field.
He's just the only one that has a charisma and can turn complicated concepts into words that us idiots can understand.
