Didn’t realize that you needed a degree in Chemical Engineering to mix up some “gin ‘n juice”…

Did they really not have a Chemical Engineering program before?
I never knew they had one, then heard that they did, and now am being informed that they are getting one.

A diploma mill is still a diploma mill no matter how many fancy degrees they try and offer. I wouldn't hire someone with a Southern degree to tend to my pet rat.

I feel personally attacked by this comment

true story, was under a lot of local pressure to hire a Saudi chem engr. graduate from a Saudi university. The interview was difficult, hard to get any competent responses to justify the hire. When finally I asked him to describe the process for distilling alcohol. He did a complete job describing how to ferment the feed to the still, need for condensation and reflux, top and bottom still temperatures etc. He turned out to be a competent engr. in an ethylene plant. Southern University will have some competent engrs. But you gotta speak the language

I was an EE at LSU. Some EEs had to take a very complex Operating Systems class at LSU and learn how to access memory, drives and other hardware via complex code. Half my EE class took the similar class at southern. They learned how to install windows 95 from a cd.

Had a DEI hire a black woman as an "Electrical Engineer" in a big chemical company I was working for and she was assigned to one of our plant expansion projects. After one team meeting I told my boss she is clueless has no idea what she is doing! Well after a few weeks the plant team members asked for her to be replaced. Well it was not her fault she was in over her head. Felt sorry for her but... She went to a black college. They moved her around to different departments but in the end she quit.
Then on the other hand worked with a black male Electrical engineer from the east coast and he was a work machine. Dude was on top of everything and one of the best I worked with in over 30 years in the industrial plant field. Not sure which college he went to but dude was solid!
So every person should be judged only on the output and work ethic!! The cream rises to the top but in this day and age you have to work harder to make up for the ones who can't perform!
Glad I'm retired and I do not have to work in this crazy woke environment anymore!

Does everyone still take thermodynamics at SU in the summer? Back in my days that’s what many did.

I used a slide rule and have no idea of what accessing memory, complex code is. My EE prof was an ex Iranian, whose requirement for non ee majors was to show up for every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday class at 7:30 am to get a c. I got the c

Both Southern and Grambling had Chemical Engineers hired by DuPont in Orange, TX in the 1970's

I had a satirical response but I'm glad to see an HBCU start to move away from the generally worthless non-STEM degrees.

McNeese Chem E's if hired outside of the Lake Chuck area were usually reassigned to environmental work due lack of skills back then too

I've been an engineer for 18 years and any individual that I have worked with from an HBCU is astoundingly unprepared and usually does subpar work.

A PhD chemical engineer at the same plant published a book, The Professionals Who Are Not in 1971. He complained about certain demographics being poorly educated and relegated to environmental work in the plant, which wasn't the highest priority in those days. Dupont asked for his resignation.

No BS, I worked with an SU mechanical engineer that talked just like that. He didn't last long
There were a few good ones too though.
