BATON ROUGE — Students at Southern University will soon be able to work toward a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

The Louisiana Board of Regents recently approved the establishment of Southern's new Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree program within the College of Sciences and Engineering, marking the first time a degree of its kind has been offered at a Louisiana HBCU.

"This program will expand educational opportunities for our students, strengthen Louisiana’s engineering workforce pipeline, and position Southern University as a leading contributor to innovation, economic development, and industrial competitiveness," Lealon L. Martin, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, said.

The program is set to offer a hands-on curriculum that integrates chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering science and process design.

The inaugural class of the chemical engineering program will be welcomed in fall 2026 or spring 2027.

Kids that flunk out of LSU ChemE can switch to SU ChemE instead of switching to LSU CM

Will it be accredited? The ME program at Southern lost accreditation when I was at LSU. I still worked with some Southern ME grads years later. I don’t know how you get hired graduating from an engineering school with no accreditation.

But will anyone be a qualified/hirable chemical engineer through the SU program?

Wait. All these damn HBCUs we have to fund and they are such crap colleges they did not even offer BS in chemical engineering in the state of freaking Louisiana. I knew they may have been crap programs but to not even have them at all?

Government is shite.

They are just getting a dedicated STEM building, which is what is allowing them to offer the degree program.

Between that, the business school building, and other things they have under construction or in the works anyone saying they need more money is a liar.

I've worked with some of them. They are mostly dei hires for large corporate companies. They have little understanding of technical engineering concepts and eventually just perform admin work.

looks liek they got it back.

ABET

I remember then the southern kids came to LSU for a summer school class. It was a mid level class and they didnt know basic math principles you have to know in prereq engineering courses.

The department had to come in and made 2 grading scales.

The people were nice but if you asked them what a^2 + b^2 equaled, they would look at you like your speaking a different language.
