Digging a trench under a house in 100 degree weather isn’t that bad at 25 years old. Try doing that at 60. Trade jobs are like being a stripper. Good money while your body still holds up.

The biggest fallacy is that all the Indians grow up to be chiefs. The other is that spending your formative years learning a trade somehow develops your business acumen. People go to business school for a reason, not that everyone who learns how to run a business must go to business school.
I’m not saying there aren’t alternative ways to learn how to run a business.

Have to remind them you can’t continue to be a dumbass and think you’ll settle for the trades and still cut it. Plenty of dumbasses get by in college, a tradesman has to be sharp and good at his craft.

The OT is quick to call everyone below the 2% a failure.
In this what source of education and what career path is the best, I think it’s important to acknowledge we all have different end goals. Personally, I feel like the people I know with the most success have been the ones that have pivoted multiple times and reinvented themselves multiple times.

I know a plumber. This dude just turned 40. Owns two houses. Ones a rental. He still drives 2001 gmc sierra. Smoking hot gf. Anything in life he wants he has. Everyday he is playing golf at 4 o clock. Guys living the dream.

I reckon most plumbers start with a small operation doing mostly residential shite jobs out of a van/truck with tools. Many of those fail (and go back to working for larger outfits) and a very small % grow slowly over time.
There are "trade families" who pass on businesses.
But typically a business like you described your son's boss owning are bought by other successful outfits who have the money (and ability to get loans large enough) to do so.

For every plumber like this there are probably 50-100 working hourly at 50 with a body breaking down.

I know the answer but you have this weeks statistics from around the country? Because I do - its what I do for a living. There is a downturn in employment opportunities for all building trade categories currently that is higher than the normal seasonal downturn. Building permits of ALL kinds are down across the entirety of the US and in all but select markets. It is what it is. There are lot of building trades professionals out of work currently in the US and it is in every trade and almost every market.....

Nothing wrong with trade schools, but always be skeptical of others telling you what's best for your children.
An elected school board member I know in Florida floods her FB and other socials about the benefits of jobs in the trades. One of her kids is in law school and the other just graduated.
